A story related to me by a friend ages ago: in a university psychology class the professor told the male students to pretend they were girls and talk about what they thought girls talked about when they were together with just other women and the same with the female students in the class.
The guys went first and talked to each other as girls about hair, make up, cute boys, gossip. It was mostly benign stuff and everyone one had a bit of a laugh. The girls agreed that it was fairly accurate (probably because the guys didn't know about what really gets talked about on girls' night outs).
When it came to the girls though they presented the crudest caricature of sex-trashing men who only talked about fucking girls. Their language and mannerism shocked the guys and even embarrassed the professor (male) according to my friend. Their concept of guys was as knuckle-dragging apes who only talked about sex and crudely at that.
In recent times it reminds me of that shitty buzzfeed video "35 (loaded) questions women have for men" where one of them says men can easily talk about boobs for hours
What the professor and the guys in the class told them was that guys generally talk about women only a little bit and they don't talk that way about their girlfriends/wives. They told the girls guys talk about a wide range of topics like sports, movies, cars, jobs, their classes, politics, life experiences serious ones but mostly humorous. The girls found all this hard to believe.
What I took away from the story then and now is:
1) that men understand women more than they do us (except they and my friend missed the point that the behavior the girls were exhibiting as men was closer to what and how they talk about on girls' night out)
2) women have an overall poor opinion of men (probably because they think we are like them) and don't understand men as much as they think they do.
tl;dr: college thought experiment of gender swapping reveals guys have better opinion of women than women have of men (surprise! surprise!)
