This is overly paranoid. Where I work (small, mid sized specialized manufacturer) we are, for the most part, like a big family. 200-300 people, I know a big portion of them on a first and last name basis. A lot of us are friendly. We all work very hard, but we joke around too. I've worked with some of these guys on the road, living out of hotels for weeks at a time, being around them constantly - and it's a cool feeling knowing people like that, respecting people like that. I learn tons from talking to these guys, many of them know things that they only share with people they like, and I've gotten awesome advice from a lot of them I never would've thought of. Hell I even talk to the owners quite a bit. I'm friends with a few of them outside of work as well.

If you spend the majority of your working hours in a place where you believe you shouldn't have friends, you live a sad existence. People are the spice of life, not things. The caveat is that, of course, chasing women at work is stupid - but making friends isn't.

The reason it is called "work" is that "social happy fun time" or "recess" is not an accurate description.

For reasons I can't fathom, millenials seem to care way too much about what other people think of them - leading to the sort of behavior you describe. In other generations, people realized that what coworkers think of them is "what can he do for me" or "how can I take advantage of him" or "what do I have to do to protect myself from him."

Your coworkers are competing with you - for promotions and raises, for praise, to avoid blame, for the bigger office or just the boss's time. Treating them as if they were actual friends is just stupid.

At this point most millenials will sputter and object that "No, that's wrong, it shouldn't be like that!" Well no shit Sherlock, people should be angels, but they're not. Get with the program.

The best motto to live by, when it comes to work, is "Don't shit where you eat." Your livelihood is too valuable to risk.

All it takes is one sexual harassment claim, or one backstabbing work "friend," to ruin your professional career, and make it a million times harder to find another job.

The exact opposite is true. You will never be fired for being liked, but you will very often be fired for being productive. I'm blown away by how many times I have seen companies fire their most productive people. It absolutely destroys morale, so the remaining good people all leave.

Best way to climb the corporate ladder is to go your own way and never hang out with co-workers unless you are getting paid to do so. Play the game, act like you are 'part of the team'... but any time there is an after-work get together going on, whether its company sponsored or just a group going out... simply back out of it. Don't go. Keep your work separate from your life. Once management realizes you don't rely on the company to live a full life, you will have that extra bargaining chip when it comes review time. There will never be hint that you might stay just because you love your coworkers so much. You will silently demand a competitive wage to stay, not for any other reason other than that's what you deserve.

Lesson you're learning: Don't shit where you eat. At the job, your priority is the job. Friends might happen, but don't force it. Women...avoid at all costs. If you must interact with them, be polite, brief, and above all, nonopinionated.

Be wise like the serpent but innocent like the dove. To often in the work environment people will act like your friend in order to pump you of useful information then stab you in the back if it advances their career. So it's best to keep coworkers at arm's length. You don't have to be an asshole. But don't be an open book either.

It's okay to focus on your job. Just make sure that your boss knows you did the job so that you get full credit.

Oh man, back when I worked in tech the boss's daughter would haunt the place on the reg. He was paying her too, to idly adjust shit on the shelves, occasionally work the till, and basically gossip all day.

She'd drop into the repair lab (where I worked) a few times a week just to talk about fuck all. I'd keep it short, make minimal eye contact, and try and get on with the job.

Guess who gets disciplined.

Apparently I was supposed to be "friendlier" and "more accommodating" to this chick - even after I told my boss that her interfering with the running of the lab (even bringing food and soda, dripping with condensation) is reducing the number of billable hours I could render, he still wanted his little princess (read: useless fuck trophy) to 'feel good on the job'.

You can be friendly at work but don't make your outside friend group composed of work folks. Branch out.

Also, be guarded at work and do not talk about personal things.

Look at the logistics of it. You spend approximately 8 hours a day for 5 days a week interacting with people, include members of the opposite sex. Many people take advantage of that to pursue a coworker. Back in my blue pill days, I took advantage of this. Two of my relationships resulted from us being co-workers. I also dated a lot of women from my places of employment. Obviously this was risky but I didn't give a shit.

So many comments here seem so paranoid and cynical. I live in small town America, in the heartland. Your coworkers are your family out here, you rely on each other, trust each other. If you aren't joking around while you work and shooting the breeze every so often, you are missing out on connections that can help you accomplish more, be more valued to the company by being a key player, learn things and get advice from old salts.

Sure, don't let it get out of hand - there's work to do, but to shun interaction is foolish.

some of my best friends to this day I have met because of jobs I've had... so friends, yes.

Have also dated at work and that does not end well. Everything from causing scenes at work to needing to switch departments.

Never lost a job due to these events, but will never date at work again.
