Not sure how anyone can offer reassurance. The only thing I have thought of when it comes to reincarnation is how does one explain the population growth? Logically humans were few at the beginning, then multiplied. So where did all of these new incarnations come from if we are just recycling again and again?

There may or may not be an afterlife. Of the various possibilities reincarnation is the least likely because if reincarnation were to occur you would expect there to be some evidence of it having happened. People would remember some aspect of their past lives. If you return to state tabula rasa upon death and it is just your "life energy" that gets recycled into a new being could you even say that it is really you?

As for the other views on an afterlife that don't involve reincarnation we can't gather any evidence to verify or repudiate them. Dieing is a process that takes time. The people who "die" for 5 minutes before being resuscitated were never dead, they were dieing so none of their accounts of their experiences have anything to do with the afterlife. Dieing is like walking down a long hallway with a door at either end. The door you enter, the door that leads back to being alive doesn't close the instant that you enter the hallway. It stays open for a while and under the right medical circumstances you can turn around and go back through it. If you do return you have no information about what death is like because you never made it to the end of the hallway and opened the door leading to death. Of course the instant that you do reach the door leading to death the door that leads back to life is immediately slammed shut and locked forever.

In order to know what if anything lies beyond death's door you must open it and pass through. If you open it and pass through it is generally thought can never return to tell anyone what you have found.

As a Christian I believe that death is not the absolute end of who I am as an individual. It is up to each of us to decide what we believe and to act accordingly based upon those beliefs. I don't believe in being afraid of what awaits me after death regardless of what it may be. If what awaits me is good then it is because God is merciful. If what awaits me is bad I'm fully aware of everything I have done to earn it. If nothing awaits me then I won't be cognizant as I cease to exist. If I am reincarnated then I will have another chance to live my life as I see fit and make of it what I can.
