Having gone through a divorce myself about 2 years ago I can tell you a few numbers from the inside. Admittedly these will change from state to state but you may be able to get a rough answer with some of this: [WARNING incoming text wall]

Any dispute on the welfare of the children? The court will immediately impose a GAL (guardian ad litem) to represent the children's legal interest. This will be an attorney the court has dealt with in the past who will likely demand $10,000 up front and you will be forced to sign an agreement saying you are also responsible for any overages which will always happen. My GAL's bill came to about $12,000. This was jsut for an evaluation and recommendations, if the GAL has to testify it gets much more expensive very quickly.

Any dispute over visitation will result in you being forced to go to a supervised visitation facility at about $60/hr or have a CPS-trained counselor facilitate the visit at about $50/hr.

Any dispute over property during the move-out will result in you needing a police officer present during property transfers (DO THIS - it will keep her from robbing you blind) at a cost of $175-$225 for a minimum four hour engagement. I had to have the police present at three different times.

The big one: Attorneys. If you're lucky you can get an attorney that only charges a $3k retainer up front and will bill you the rest as you go. A really good attorney will start to work immediately on your case without the check in hand yet. But, they are still expensive so buckle up. A standard divorce with a fair amount of bickering and such will easily set you back at least $10K on each side. Every time you have to bring the other party into court on anything it will run you at least $1500. Attorneys charge for travel time and they're on the clock all the time while you're waiting for the court to get around to you, this adds up quickly. It's also a standard tactic for one side to just not show up or reschedule after everyone is already at the courthouse to force the other side to rack up a big legal bill. My attorney end-to-end cost me about $25K and was worth every penny as he protected me and my property for decades to come.

Therapists: chances are you're going to need one or be ordered to see one yourself and one for your kid(s). Hopefully you have good health insurance that will cover most or all of this. If not, get ready to shell out $25 per visit as your copay or much much more ($200/hr) if anyone needs a psychiatrist and does not have the coverage.

Child support: the standard in my state is the custodial parent gets 22% of the other parent's income. From this you can extrapolate some totals with number of people working and their average salary. Yay, algebra!

Alimony: can't speak to this as the harpy didn't get it. Told you my attorney was worth it ;)

Bottom line: my divorce cost me over $35,000 plus 22% of my income for the next 15 years. But, it could have been much much worse.

One of the best parts of that movie is understanding how little money is involved in Divorce in Scandinavian countries. The incentive of lawyers to keep the process going for years here is terrible.

We initially tried a mediator, unfortunately 'war department' didn't feel that was going her way so she hired an attorney. The attorneys cost $60k and dragged the process through the court for three years. She didn't get any more assets from the attorneys and there was less money to split in the end. I am sure she believed she made a wise decision. My attorney tried to move things along but she side wanted to drag it out. The only way it stopped is when she started paying her attorney out of her share of the funds.

Yup its all about unfair transfer of wealth from males to females.

Thats why prostitution is illegal. Because it doesn't transfer enough wealth from men to women.

Government already pays so much for women's shit. They need stuff like this to keep men enslaved and keep women sated yet still spending like crazy.
