Check out the TLDR below, it will put this in an easier format.
There are four things that matter in society:
- The Learning of the Wise (can the smartest focus on knowledge to improve how we do things).
- The Justice of the Powerful (is resource gathering fair for all).
- The Celebration of the Righteous (what traits we encourage).
- The Valor of the Brave (suppression of emotions to overcome extreme difficulty).
There are two natural states that human societies fall into, and it's based on availability of resources. One comes from a resource scarce society that requires discipline and risk to win, and the other comes from a resource rich society that requires manipulation to win.
Resource Scarce Society
When resources are scarce, a society is literally only as good as those who are capable of gathering those resources, and they take risk to acquire, which naturally men are better at doing. We can suppress our emotions to take a risk, or we can rely on the dopamine and endorphins to be completely engaged with neurotransmitters and be so focussed on the goal that we do whatever it takes to get it... like playing through the pain of a shattered arm because playing in the SuperBowl is all that matters. But through the risk, and pain, and winners and losers, those taking the risk all tend to develop a sense of respect between each other. This even extends way beyond just handshakes after sports, but into other male dominated arenas like wars, we've all seen pictures of nazi's and G.I.'s sharing a smoke, or any amount of truces that take place once enough losses have occured and resources are split and men who were just enemies literally shake hands, and soldiers who once shot at each other can become friends later on in life. Men develop respect for those who risked. It shapes our societies and makes a risk dominated society more founded in love and respect and often men who even experienced the worst will work the hardest afterwards to make sure that others don't have to go through hardship of resources since the risk caused the winners to lose a lot (even the winners in the resource scarce society had losses that affect them and greed carries pain and sacrifice with it). So literally the ones from the front (who "won" the resource game) try to balance out the resources among all based on respect and fear of the game. The leaders of the resource scarce society used risk and discipline to win, which leads to respect as a foundation of their relationships in that society.
Resource Rich Society
In a resource rich community, we see what happens. We are becoming a global community and the resources are available for everyone, which turns into a Women dominated society (which so much has been written about women's abilities to dominate the social game and the value societies hold for women's lives). The society has no risk involved in attaining resources, and the game changes into the exact opposite and literally becomes your ability to take resources from others. Where as men's focus is on the resource and simply attaining it at all costs, if the resource becomes other people, then suddenly jealousy is a valuable trait similar to scouting out resources. And even crazier, the competition becomes learning how they got a resource and exploiting it or exploiting them (the phenomenon of women making "frienemies" and jealousy as a female trait). The winner of the resource rich society will never face risk, so there will never be respect as a trait among winners, because there is never an end to the winning and it literally sets you back in doing so. Much more effective is shaming, because if enough people engage in it, the winners in the resource rich society will face pressure and gain enemies until they distribute whatever resource is being shamed. In fact, in the resource rich community, the valor of the brave isn't those who overcame their emotions in facing great odds of ultimate risk (since risk is eliminated), the valor of the brave becomes those who were a victim of events beyond everyone else's experience, in which they were forced to overcome their emotions to push through. This also means that the ability to lower expectations of emotional overcoming improves the ability of gaining resources. So altogether, in the key phases of a society, we end up with completely different winners based on the availability of resources. The winners traits will end up being those who were able to use jealousy to identify possible resources, shame others to give up their position and claim to those resources, and manipulate their way closer to resources than others in that society.
TL;DR (TABLES!)-
| Societal Requirement | Resource Scarce Society | Resource Rich Society |
| The Learning of the Wise (to gather resources) | More efficiency, facts about the resource and tactics if it's fighting an enemy. Inward enhancing process, Outward learning resources. | Making it seem like one is of a higher resource society or on the same level as the leaders to be closer to resources. Outward learning process. Inward enhancing resources. |
| The Justice of the Powerful | Did it come down to risk and discipline for the winners and even then, can rules be created to limit losses. Try to limit losses of all, and reward risk of few. Creates Respect in Leaders Traits. | Manipulation of aliances creates more resources for all aliance members involved shaming can redistribute all resources. Try to manipulate risk of few, to reward losses of many. Creates Jealousy in Leaders Traits. |
| The Celebration of the Righteous | Exposure of the traits above. Leads to a spiritual society, Promotes Sacrifices. | Exposure of the traits above. Leads to a celebrity society. Promotes Individuality. |
| The Valor of the Brave | Overcoming emotions. Overcoming self-emotion to risk oneself to gain resources for society as a whole. Promotes Sacrifice. | Overcoming emotions. Overcoming self-emotions in a situation that was unlike others experiences. Promotes Victimization. |
