Hi guys,

I have a long time friend, we have a lot in common and always have fun together. However, I have gone my own way and he is in a long term relationship. I am prudent with my money and he is reckless with his, this often results in me having to lend him money. I am quick to respond to him if he needs me but he has become ignorant, often not returning my calls and ignoring my texts. We have shared many good times and he has been a great asset in my social life.

I have reached a point where my mind is saying "I do not gain anything from being his friend as it stands, he is an impediment to me going my own way" but my heart/gut is saying "he is an old friend, you must find a way to reconcile with him".

At what point do you cut someone off if they are, similar to a woman would, becoming a burden to maintain a relationship with?

TLDR; If a friendship starts to become less mutually beneficial, how long should you keep trying to re-establish how things were before you cut them off?
