The thing about men is that we have what I call an unspoken brotherhood. We don't even have to know a guy to help him out. I'll give a business example even though I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. A few years ago I was standing outside a concert venue which happens to be across the street from a Masonic Lodge. I start shooting the shit with a freemason about starting my own business and that I was struggling to get local clients. He says ah, I can help you. So I give him my card and don't really expect anything from it. The next business day I get a call from a local business owner that the guy I talked to outside the venue spoke highly of me and my services and he wants to work with me. Just like that I was handed my first client from the help of someone I didn't even know.
Within two weeks of working with the client he referred me to others and suddenly I had 4 clients. As of today, the process continues and I now take my clients as referrals only. It's what works for me. I've had female clients that I did stellar work for and put their business on the map but I have never received a referral from one of them.
So I got to thinking of why that is. Why are men always so willing to help each other where women are not? I don't think men are at the top of companies because of unequal opportunities, I think they're there because other great men were there to help them.
Yesterday I had a chance to talk to the Freemason I ran into outside the venue years ago and was able to ask him why he helped some guy he didn't know. He says, “because it is my duty to my fellow brother. The world is our hunt and we are a pack. You are my brother, just as every other man is my brother. You are never alone.”
An interesting outlook on what makes men the way we are. Just the other day I saw a guy flirting with a girl as her friend comes up to try and pull her away to leave. They looked like they were having engaging conversation so without even a second thought I intercepted her friend and started talking to her so he had a chance to get the other girls number. He gets the number and turns to me to thank me for my help. No thanks needed I told him, there will always be a guy there to help.
