I don't understand what's so unbelievable about a judge letting a woman keep a house that was quite literally hers to begin with. I guess the moral of the story is to not give a house away, because you may want it back at a later time.

If she was living in his home at any point, rather than supporting herself in her own separate home, then it's basically a "common law marriage" scenario.

Let this be a lesson to all men. You can't just avoid the marriage itself. You have to avoid the trappings of a marriage too.

Don't let a woman become dependent on you financially in any way. Don't think that you can 'live with' a woman and escape without getting wrecked. Same goes for any polyamorous dopes who think the openness of the relationship will protect your assets and investments. If she lives at your place (or if you're wealthy, any of your places) she'll eventually take you to court and win.

He got off much lighter than if he had been married. De facto relationships, even in Britain, still offer far less "protection" for women. And as much as some women's rights and legal groups would want to make de facto relationships equivalent to marriage, there would be considerable opposition to this.

I worry about the precedent this might set. He was clear the entire relationship that he had no intentions of getting married. He took care of her, gave her a home to live in and money because she was too stupid to get a job. And they're treating that as abusive. Its abusive to not want to give your girlfriend a wedding eventually, even when you're upfront and honest about it the whole time.

Why is it his problem she's unable to get a proper education and job? I bet she didn't complain about not having to work all those years.

It is not safe to get into a relationship anymore.
