When you think of the cost of marriage, what comes to mind?

Money, peace of mind, money, living space, money, sanity, money, friends, money, business opportunities, money, free time, money, things I enjoy doing, money, health, and most importantly, money.

I heard a married man on TV say (regarding whether or not he was going to stay in his own marriage), “I shouldn’t be with someone if I’m not happy.” It’s an attitude many people have, and hearing it made my stomach turn.

What an accurate reflection of the self-centered society we live in, everyone believing their main goal in life is their own personal happiness. What a small and shallow way to live.

Cupcake, I only have about 70 years of life I can reasonably expect to live. 70 years is a long life, but not a long time. If I do not figure what makes me happy, and do it, in those 70 years, who will? You? Why should my happiness be dependent on you? Who are you to believe that you should even have a say in my happiness if I am not causing you harm?

WRONG. "Marriage" is about creating legal obligations between two individuals and the state. In the Anglosphere, marriage has primarily been about producing lawful heirs and keeping probate and inheritance questions to a minimum. It's all clearly printed on the back of that marriage license you and your beta-bux signed, including how to divorce him and get your cash and prizes.

No wonder we choose divorce over commitment.

If by "we" you mean women, the primary parties initiating divorces in America, then yes.
