So basically foreign women sent by the UN come to discuss gender equality here. I have a billion reasons for not liking this article but the two major things are:

They went to both Texas and Alabama. Two very conservative states. You can't extrapolate anything political if these are two of the three states you went to. That is like going to Somalia and Sudan to generalize about the state of affairs in all of Africa.
Basically all of their complaints are that "Europe has this...the US doesn't!" Which like ya I can understand why you think that sucks but when your argument basically boils down to "This country is bad because it doesn't have what we have" you have to realize that there might be reasons for that, and that there are some things we have that you don't have (one of them being a stronger economy lol).

To be fair, it's utterly ridiculous that there isn't paid maternity leave in the US

No, it isn't.

In actuality the thing that is ridiculous is the very IDEA of mandatory "maternity leave" -- and "paid maternity leave" is even more egregiously ridiculous.

All it actually does is depress the wages of everyone else. The same with the rest of the so called "safety net" provisions.

The reality is that women, especially MOTHERS, shouldn't be in the "paid workforce" to begin with, and no amount of "maternity leave" -- paid or unpaid -- is going to end up doing ANYTHING positive as far as whether or not the children will be "thriving".

In fact, arguably it has the exact OPPOSITE effect -- it creates and supports the delusion that women can "have it all", career + children, etc, without truly being committed to either -- in the long run that damages both the employer (and other employees) AND it damages the children as well.

The problem of a debt-ridden society is in fact an outgrowth of the increasing number of these "interventions" in the economy, both in business, and in the workplace on behalf of women, various other so called "minorities", etc.

All feminism actually accomplished was to give businesses a "2 for the price of 1" deal, and worse it not only added additional burdens onto businesses, but massively increased the taxation "take" out of families productivity -- along with the ever increasing political "gifting" of so called "benefits" it effectively flatlined workers pay, and undercut/taxed away the saving ability out of the standard middle class wages; yet of course advertising and the promotion of the consumption society continued apace, with the government facilitating ever increasing ways of providing "credit"... basically looping the rope and tying it into a proverbial noose into which they then coaxed the ignorant public to place their individual and collective necks.

And the majority of the public is so stupid that they do exactly that.

This. Women don't really want to have careers really, I mean this is anecdotal, but my mom is an electrical engineer. Say about 7-8 years when I was about 9-10 she got sick and took a leave, she hasn't worked since then. She complains about how she never saw my siblings and I enough growing up.

I've known others who did something similar but with an extra "twist" or two.

The give birth, take the maternity leave... come back to work; then a year or two later give birth to a second kid, take maternity leave again, go back to work again for a year or two; and then...

No they don't get pregnant again, instead they claim that as some result of the pregnancy, resulting changes in hormones, body metabolism (or whatever) that they have now come down with "carpal tunnel" or some other "disability" and after going through various mandatory "treatments" that (quelle surprise may work for other people, but just don't seem to be effective with them) so they create a claim they can no longer "work" in their prior career... and then go on permanent disability (thanks Social Security!) which becomes a sort of lifelong "paid maternity leave" (which keeps on paying even after the kids become adults).

And of course by that point in time invariably the kids are already in school... so, TADA! they've essentially "gamed" the system into paying them to take early retirement.

Typically it doesn't prove as satisfying as they'd thought though, so in many cases they end up divorcing the hubby a few years later (while they can still milk him for child support for a decade or so, while ostensibly being the "mother" to the kids, even though by that point in time the kids are generally either teens or nearly teens, and don't exactly "need" {or want} a "mommy" anymore -- in fact at that point in their life what they generally need is a FATHER to set rules & boundaries and discipline... but he's the one "parent" that is considered entirely useless by our society, and what few chances he does have to spend time with the kids; well he's more of a "favorite uncle" who does entertaining things than an actual father).

That's a hell of a theory on wage stagnation, but it doesn't pass the sniff test.

Well in your case, I have no doubt it doesn't... but that's primarily because you haven't yet pulled your head out of your ass.

You're completely ignoring that a huge part of growth from the 50's to the 80's was due to women coming into the work force. Even if they are half of productive as men, it still means an extra 25% of growth. It's just another point in which the country as a whole is better off.

I'm not "ignoring" it at all.

But unlike you, I know what actual "production" is, and that there is a substantial difference between ACTUAL productivity growth, and the bullshit metrics of "GDP" etc.

But clearly in your mind, the cause of the situation the country is in today has nothing to do with the credit boom, the growth of shadow banking, or the reversal of a lot of things from the New Deal. It's women joining the work force...

No it has everything to do with the fraud of fiat money and fractional reserve banking... but that in fact is one of the underlying reasons WHY certain factions were so desperate to get women into the workforce... it was one of the ways to continue the farce of "growth" that was not actually productive.

And puhlease, no ridiculously ignorant bullshit about the "New Deal" -- which only worsened everything -- and created many of the ticking time bombs that are going to be exploding at various points in the next decade or three.

I've just read the Francisco D'Anconia passage from the "Atlas Shrugged", just to inform myself of what everybody is speaking about when referring to this. My reading is that one of the strong features of the speech is to say that money was only virtuous when it was attached to the value of gold.

The question I have is: why gold?

Gold fluctuates in value just like any other commoditiy in the market, yet is main "usefullness" is in jewelry, with uses in electronics, although in minor quantities. Why is there so much literature speaking of gold's intrinsic value?

I understand that gold is a noble metal, and doesn't corrod, but so are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, osmium, iridium, and platinum. So why on earth would gold be a better marker of value than any other of these?

Why is that "precious", because it demonstrates that the person has engaged in a SHITLOAD (we're talking years and years) of passive ass-in-chair consumption & regurgitation of pre-digested jargon... but absent any ACTUAL experience of the REAL world (in this case the physical world).

But hey, remember how I said you're a "cookie cutter" drone? Well that means your ignorance (and the above quoted text really is an example of ignorance, that is "lack of knowledge or understanding") is actually a very common problem.

Which means you're not alone -- your generation contains MILLIONS of others just as ignorant as you. Now that's not necessarily a good thing, in fact in most ways it's a really "scary" and dangerous thing -- especially for society.

But it DOES mean that there is a sort of like "Sesame Street" lesson that was done to educate ignorant little children (just like you). Ergo here's the answer to your question from 10 months ago.

Well the problem isn't just fiat money (though as per Goethe's Emperor who makes a "Faustian" bargain with Mephistopheles, just by itself that will inevitably bankrupt a nation). It's also the fraud that underlies fractional reserve banking, which of course inevitably becomes fictional reserve banking, and invariably pushes a country into fiat money.

Both of those things of course really just proceed from what is essentially counterfeiting of one type or another; the creation of a "markers" for things which either do not yet exist, or which may exist, and which may even be in the possession of the creator of the markers, but to which they do not hold valid or exclusive title to; and certainly not in the quantities that they have created the markers.

The root problem (especially like "Junior" above with his inane ramblings about the table of elements) is one of a fundamental failure to comprehend (or to accept, but instead reject) the fact that the very CONCEPT of a unit of currency or "money" is that is and indeed MUST be a "unit of measure"; much like an ounce or gram, or a gallon or liter, or an acre/hectare, a yard or a meter. Once you comprehend that, then the idea that such a unit need NOT be defined in any terms of physical reality -- but that it can remain entirely "flexible" and/or abstract and ever-changing, continually diluted via counterfeiting -- is revealed as an obvious absurdity; because a unit of measure that has no definition, or that is not "defined" in terms of anything other than itself... is not in fact a unit, nor a measure of anything, it is a non-entity, a non-sequitur; and thus such a system is ultimately naught but a fraud, it only works via deception, subverting something that was (once) a reliable defined thing, with a wholly valueless counterfeit substitute.

And of course once an entity -- be it government and/or government in corrupt-collusion with a subset of people it extends special privileges to (allowing them to "do the dirty deed" and reap the rewards in exchange for a present gain in the theft and first dibs on the counterfeiting) -- well once it chooses to engage in or perform such a fundamental level of fraud, any and all of the later layers of fraud that are built upon it are relatively trivial by comparison.

So...of course inevitably that whole structure ends up engendering a massive Leviathan-sized intrusively-authoritarian and uselessly-bureaucratic, even bizarrely-byzantine* state; I say inevitably because there is simply no practical way that the structure can ever actually fulfill the promises it has made... it is bankrupt from it's very conception.

* lower case "b" meaning a burdensome system of a maze-like, ridiculously elaborate multi-layered administration, with excessively complicated paperwork & labyrinthine processes; generally facilitating the creation and cover of a number of loopholes that allow for a variety of corrupt political practices and/or collusion with special interests and the creation of entirely unaccountable quasi-governmental entities that then drain off the fruits of the population's labor.

Please be warned America, don't go down the path of Europe, especially Northern mainland Europe (Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland). They are in deep trouble and are collapsing. They are not good examples of anything other than self-destruction.

And Western Europe (UK, France, Spain, Portugal) is not much better. Eastern Europe is the only small bastion of sanity - places like Poland, Hungary, Romania and to some extent Russia. I may have to move to eastern Europe if things get much worse in Britain, it's fast becoming a shithole. In eastern Europe, feminism hasn't taken the power it has in western Europe, and the women seem to be less bad.

In the West, we have ideological nutters campaigning non-stop for their dogma, even if it makes the lives of normal people worse. We also have powerful special interest lobbyists who make life better for companies and certain demographics (namely feminism lobbying for even more power for women) but make life worse for everyone else.
