It's difficult to find legitimately "good" friends, I have found at least. The other thing is that I probably have not been trying that much at all as of late, since I am pretty happy with my own company, but I think it is always nice to have another person you can bounce stuff off of, and them do the same to give you some more perspective on things.

You need to go through challenging stuff and share that with someone to make a new friend. That's why it was easier when we were kids. We were going through new experiences and sharing it with friends. When the going gets tough is when you know who is what as a person. Now, as adults, we just can't seem to make friends because our lives are predictable and non challenging in comparison.

Unfortunately most male friends these days are huge simps that will not hesitate to backstab you in a moment of weakness just to slow themselves as a better match for their lady or whatever these irrational people sell ya out for. I am speaking from personal experience btw since i had to cut out a long time childhood friend due to that. Gossiping,backstabbing and being a cunt in general. Be really careful who you hang out with because you never know how another person can react to things unless tested.
