I get its a joke, and it is funny, but marriage was invented by aristocrats thousands of years ago as a form of political/economic action. The idea that two people who weren't both wildly rich could/would ever get married used to be an absurdity.

There's actually a real evolutionary reason.

Tribes where like big families, all women were the women of the tribe and they fucked in exchange of presents or if men fought between them.

Guess what tribe will grow faster, one where men kill eachother for a women or a tribe where everyone had 1 exclusove partner?

If two tribes where to fight for resources the one with more men will win, so the exclusivity of relationships was being kept because the other tribes where conquered.
