I have a close friend who's helped me way back in the past in terms of figuring myself out and getting out of a rut, and exploring computer science which turned out for the best. I'm super grateful and so obviously I have that respect for him, but at the same time, this friend is somewhat passive aggressive. He's started running their own music label and invited me to it, but music hasn't been my priority as of late. I'm focusing on web development and getting my income settled, so from there, I have a solid income base and can start taking risks and working on side-hustles. This friend is framing my lack of participation in the label as us not having so much in common and he's like "I'm inviting you, but if I blow up, like we'll turn up and shit but don't expect anything if you're not taking part". It makes sense, but the way it was brought up felt kind of forced. I just got the vibes that he was using the fact that he helped me as some sort of covert contract for me using my own self-awareness to be a part of the label. It's to the point where it felt like a planned thing on his end. And it's like if I didn't have value for the label or seemed useful long-term, he would ghost for a while. It's just weird. Whenever I talk to him, he also tries to read for double meanings of what I'm saying underneath what I say. I've seen him do that to others before, so it's like he thinks others do the same shit. The weirdest thing is when he sent me "The Alchemist" and said that I was the Crystal Merchant in the book. Basically it's a guy who has a dream, but doesn't take action to follow it because they're scared. He frames himself obviously as the main character, and how he's bound to succeed, while I'm still not taking action. There's a line to where a friend is trying to be helpful, and then being narcissistic, and I feel like that was pretty borderline.

Anyways, he's been posting shit on the label site consistently, along with this other chick he told me about, and I genuinely see them succeeding before I get back into music as a side-hustle. I'm not envious and I want to be happy for them, but it's so hard when this friend would be the type to make some passive-aggressive shit in his music about how he made it and about how his friends regret not taking part and blah blah blah. Like it'd be an ego trip if that makes sense. So it's like I don't want to be salty, and I'm grateful, but it's to what point do I tolerate narcissism from an old close friend? It's weird since his advice was instrumental in my growth, and he was very empathetic & tolerant of my BS when I was in a rut (INFP for those that know MBTI), so I want to return that favor and I don't want to be that envious friend, but to what point does it become crossing the line?
