I live in UT and this might take a bit of context as to why the decriminalized it. (Playing devils advocate) More and more people kept having to go into court repeatedly over polygamy and it was clogging up the courts as the law got more and more aggressive about actually enforcing the laws rather than just ignore it as they've done for decades (Because it's almost always done in non-legally binding means and the FLDS community just has everyone go into court saying "No! They're not married. They just all live in the communal house together!"). But it kept coming down that while it's illegal, because it's likely to be claimed as part of "religious freedom", rather than keep wasting time, money, court time/resources, fighting something that would likely be reversed should it actually reach the supreme court, they just brought the criminal level down to make someone fighting it up that high far less likely to face the supreme court challenge.

I don't get how it's so awful, horrible, and bigoted not to allow homosexual marriage, but that's the absolute limit on what the gov't will allow. If "love is love!", why not just open up the marriage limitations to whatever combination of adults want to live like that? Who's uncle sam to say a poly triad/septangle/decadohedral can't be true love? It took too long for this to be decriminalized, the amount of polygamists is tiny as-is. IIRC you'd be disbursing fewer welfare benefits, because the current system means there's a set of 3 families that are made by a single husband, but two of them are not legal wives so they get treated like single mothers in need of tax bux.
