I am waiting for the next gen nvidia card. I want more GPU power. I am still using GTX 980 since 2014 when it was released, and still going strong. I want to build a new system if it looks promising. Skipping the RTX hype for now.

Yeah. When I built my system, I bought two 4K monitors. So I've been running 4K for the last 6 years. I put in 32GB RAM and thought that was a lot. The next one coming up will be at least 64GB. Depends on the motherboard. I can't wait.
The RAM helps a lot when you have a lot of apps and windows open. No feeling of any sign of bottlenecks.
Hope nvidia will make USB-C standard as output. My monitors uses displayport input that does 4K@60P, but hope they will transition to USB-C so it's more standardized and easier to work with.
The RTX doesn't matter to me much, because I play FPS games a lot. Most of the time, I don't stand around admiring the reflections and shadows. I need GPU power and FPS. I need to go on a killing spree while going through all the explosions and chaos.

I have an i5 from half a dozen years ago with 8GB RAM and no dedicated gpu (it died recently). Firefox gets slow sometimes, but it's generally ok. Good enough to browse this sub.
[–]bfte26 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
i5 is a beast. I'm still sitting with mine, just overclocked. Recently put in a 2080.

They will unlikely move to USB-C as a standard output, they may have one, but it will likely just DisplayPort over USB-C.
The RTX2000 series are great video cards in their own right, even when not taking the ray tracing stuff into account. That's usually something you turn on in game if you want it, but if not, having an RTX card is no different to a GTX card.
Comparing the two cards, there's a 75% increase in game FPS (https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-2080S-Super-vs-Nvidia-GTX-980/4050vs2576) (2080s has replaced the 2080 at the same price point)
If you want more frames, getting a 2080 2080s will give you that, by a long way.

You definitely need a ti for 4k. I have one and can play 4k just fine.
[–]Batman_MGTOW-1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Thats false. The only resolution that the current gen components are not ready for is 4k. I have a Asus ROG 26 inch 1440p 165hz G sync monitor, a i7 8700k, a RTX 2080 and 16 gb of the best quality ram and I can run most games well above 60fps on 1440p ultra, sometimes even above 100fps except on badly optimised games like Metro Exodus or Kingdom Come Deliverance.
You shouldnt have bought a 4k monitor when you saw that the tests showed poor performance with even an rtx 2080 ti. Also, the higher resolution doesnt change the image quality that much but it allows you to have a bigger screen that still looks good and if you use your PC a lot for work or to do other things than gaming, you can fill up your screen with a lot more windows at the same time so you can multitask better than at 1080p which is very useful.

If you're gaming on a TV anyways, it means that your fps are locked at either 60 or 120fps. One of the main reasons why a monitor is better than a TV for PCs is because monitors have an anti glare screen which means that I can play video games on a sunny day without closing my window curtains and still see whats on the screen. When I want to watch movies and tv shows during the day, I also use my gaming monitor because of that same reason. In the past, I had to stay awake late at night to play games or watch movies or tv shows because otherwise, my experience was completely ruined by annoying reflections, now I dont have that problem. The difference in image quality when it comes to video resolutions is very small, the difference is bigger when looking at graphic settings on a game or when comparing 4k blu ray to regular blu ray, but whether I game at 1440p or 1080p, other than the size of the screen, there is no difference so it isnt worth it paying more money for 4k right now. Its much better to focus on performance instead because there is actually a difference between gaming at 60 fps and gaming at 100 or 144 fps, but you wouldnt know that if you never got the opportunity to do so. I bought a RTX 2080 because it was my first PC, and I didnt buy the RTX 2080 ti because in my country the price of the rtx 2080 was the same as the price of the rtx 2080 ti in the USA and the rtx 2080 ti in my country is like 400$ higher which was too much even for my very high budget.

What’s wrong with RTX? My brother just ordered one to build his first gaming system. Is it an issue of not enough bang for the buck?
[–]Khoras_Kash1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
No, the 3000 series is rumored to be arriving in 3-6 months and will have cars that are better at around the same prices so some people decide to wait for those. But the thing is, those cars are gonna be overpriced/taken by scalpers/bug riddled for a while so the average user shouldn't really be thinking about getting one on launch. The 2070 super is the best value for price that you can get rn for 500 bones.

At least time I'm guessing they won't all be bought up by miners... :)
[–]CeleritySteam1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
NVidia was never very good for miners. There's one algo that works well on it and it's been long since commanded by ASICs.
Miners swarm mid range AMD cards.

announced 2-3 mo. from today
[–]youhavebeenwobbled1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Skip the 3000 release and wait for the 3000 supers, the 980 is still pretty great today
[–]halfhourdump0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You can probably skip the next gen too, the 980 is a great card. I bought a 1080Ti on launch day, no regrets. Skipped the 2xxx gen, probably going to skip the 3xxx gen unless it's a HUGE improvement.
[–]VlogIt0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yup, it all depends on the numbers. Like the Super isn’t much of an upgrade from the original, so it would not be a worthy upgrade for those who already have the 2080.
[–]sebastian08010 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Im also using the GTX 980 works fine. But i guess for Dying Light 2 and other future games i have to build a complete new PC.
[–]Upstairs_Towel26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I was confused for a bit til I saw the card declined haha. Like you fix computers to pay a woman's way?
[–]Actual_Device43 points44 points45 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
lol no it's a play on a meme "his hands looks like this *dirty work hands* so hers can look like this *manicure*". It's a SIMP mindset meme. This is a wonderful rephrasing, urging you to go your own way. Get your own gaming computer, be happy.
His hands looks like this *holding graphics card* so hers can look like this *consequence of nobody to leech off of*
[–]Upstairs_Towel11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I think that's what I was expecting so I had some cognitive dissonance. Obviously worked then haha
The truth of that meme:
His hands look like this so hers look like this. And the first image is the same, the second is her giving out handjobs.
[–]coqroq0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was thinking of a better 2nd image, like her trying to write a resume or something.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Been gaming lately like a maniac. Did full a upgrade to Ryzen 5, ASRock x570 motherboard, new ram, all watercooled Ann RGB the crap out of it. Only kept my AORUS RX580XTR OC because that card is a beast. Sold my old hardware and still was cheaper than a date.
Btw does anyone have a RX5700 for sale lol?
[–]driticool0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What are you playing?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Mostly COD WARZONE, COD WW2 multiplayer, Doom Eternal, mud and snow runner and few more.

PC building is a hobby I think any gent should get involved with. It doesn’t need to be a $1000 gaming rig, you could build a little $200 PC and use it for Netflix and multimedia, keep it in the living room hooked up to the TV or something.
[–]Harbinger-One1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nice, I just got a 5600XT after my R9 390 died. Waiting for Ryzen 4000 to upgrade my 4790k thats starting to really show its age.

brilliant
[–]Nate-Dawg-Not-A-Rapr1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I’ve never built a PC before. Is it relatively easy? Are there starter packs and stuff? I love playing horror games but my laptop isn’t that powerful so graphics are always low.
Any advice on the type of specs I’d need? I know that this question can kinda be ‘how long is a piece of string’. How much money should I look to spend? I can drop $2000/$3000 . Would that get me a solid PC?
[–]Nate-Dawg-Not-A-Rapr1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Wow thanks a lot for the advice! I’m still pretty new to all the specs of computers and such. I’ll check out those sub reddits. Good to know that should be enough as well

Video games are a waste of time. No real personal growth, it's just a substitute for life.
[–]RussMgtow-16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Any hobby can be considered "A waste of time". That is a stupid comment sir.
[–]0ggles-2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Programming, writing, non-fiction books, lifting, and volunteering. Video games are just a form of escapism.
[–]Batman_MGTOW4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As long as it is done in moderation it doesnt matter. I have lots of hobbies, I like to read fiction and non fiction novels, comic books (especially dc comics), I like to watch movies and tv shows, I like to play video games, and I like to lift heavy weights and sometimes I will do a some research on a historical event or time period that I find interesting. Video games are not just escapism, they can be fun and the average video game is only 10-12 hours long so it can be finished in only 2-3 days, and although there are a lot of games to play, if someone were to only focus on single player games that are that short, they could play them all very quickly. So if someone plays them in moderation, they can finish games while still having a life. And even someone who only plays video games during his free time isnt wasting time if thats what he likes to do. Its only a waste of time if you are doing something that you dont like and for absolutely no reward. Reading non fiction books just for the sake of self improvement is dumb, reading non fiction books should only be done because you want to gain useful knowledge about a wide variety of topics or one topic in particular, but self help books are time wasters for the most part because they dont teach you anything useful but only give temporary motivation. Volunteering makes sense if you like doing it, if you dont, then you are wasting your time. There is no such thing as a selfless good deed, even those who give their time benefit from it somehow otherwise they wouldnt bother with it. Writing makes sense if you have things to write and like doing it. Programming makes sense if you like doing it and are good at it. Lifting can be a waste of time if you dont make progress but only lift for the sake of lifting without having any fitness goals.

They can be a waste, just like any other activity out there.
[–]DatAfricanAmerican[S] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Video games IN MODERATION is a form of entertainment used to relax after accomplishing your goals for the day. With your logic, watching TV, listening to music, small talk with friends, reading a book of fiction, or any activity you find entertaining is a waste of time even in moderation if it's sole purpose doesn't further your life goals.
[–]Mandalina884 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a hobby, something people do to relax.
[–]CeleritySteam4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Life = slaving away for people who hate you, dealing with fake people and banal basic bitch shit, and a constant reeeeeeeeeeeeeing that unlike other background noise is anything but soothing.
Yeah, fine substituting Clown World with anything whatsoever.
