Go where the money is. Ask around and see what kind of pay you expect to get and calculate how long it will take you to pay off your debt

Then factor in how much you think you might enjoy each job

I guess think about what kind of job you won't mind doing every day...

But be mindful that a physical job can be tougher when you get older.

Does the first option guarantees a good income in the future which exceeds the debt incurred significantly?

you have way more choices than that. the world is full of them. look around and find other choices if you are not happy with those 2.

This is a hard one, the only way to make great money in trades is to take either a risky job, or one that's hard on your body....... how about take this one instead..... I don't know your age or where you're from, but here in the USA.... what I would do........ is start in a trade.... get your boots on the ground..... learn from the old guys, TAKE IN EVERYTHING you can, save every goddamn penny and start learning about starting your own business. After being in the trades for 10 years.... Find a smallish town outside of a bigger city where expansion is headed. Start your business there, be the big fish in a small pond. That pond will grow into a lake and you will grow with it. Making you a HUGE fish. This will be the best for your body and your income. If you get a degree in prosthetic design.... your income is only as high as salary's in that field.... that's the end. If you own a business in something that you're in expert in, your income limit will be huge.

There's enough knowledge for starting and running a business online. Basically find MBA programs where you can find what their courses are and text books and literally buy the text books and go through it and understand. It will take you longer to learn these things, but you'll only be out of pocket the books and not the whole class thing. if you change your mind and want to go for formal education. if you own your own business you don't need a bachelors to go and get your MBA! And then once you have that and your business experience you can go work in consulting or run someone else's business. Many different avenues you can choose throughout this life.

Try approaching this from a different angle. I'm assuming that you are American and that your education path is something like taking 5-6 classes for Fall and Spring Semester for your bachelors for about 4 years and then 2-3 classes for Fall and Spring Semesters for your masters for about 2 years. If this is not the case then my advice may not apply.

One of the key ways in which our University system (and society as a whole) traps young men with a huge debt burden is pushing the idea that your education has a time constraint. This leads to men taking out enormous loans for highly inflated education programs so that they can finish their education within the time that they are "supposed to." You can actually pay for your classes as you take them, with no regard to how long it takes you to complete school (Exceptions exist for things like medical school). As an aside, all core classes are basically the same and can be taken at a community college at a fraction of the price. I even took my high level math courses at my community college. Later when I went to university, I got a job as a math tutor and I came to realize that the University math classes were terrible beyond belief, mainly due to large class sizes and incompetent professors. Professors that teach at community college do it because they enjoy teaching, not research as is the case for University Professors.

Say you had a full time job or a part time job making really good money and took classes as you could afford them, it might add on 4 years to your bachelors, less if you take summer courses. As for your Masters' the financially wise guys I know used their bachelors to get a University job at the University they wanted to get their Masters at and used the Tuition Reimbursement program offered to get their Masters Degrees at no debt.

So instead of 6 years, you might be looking at 10-12, but so what? What's your rush? If it's your dream career you owe it to yourself to pursue it, but you owe it to your future self to do it without burdening his life with a tremendous debt load. The math generally works out too. If you compare which scenario is better off financially in the long run, you find that not taking on debt to fund your education is less costly, even taking the extra time to do it.

You'll grow as a person as well. Since you are solely responsible for the cost of your education, you are going to make damn sure you get value for your money. You'll hold your professors accountable when they are lazy and you'll use every resource freely available in University to ensure your future success.

The end result will be the same. No Employer actually cares how long it took you to complete school. If you have a perfect GPA, Job Experience, and a solid internship; you're in. Start thinking outside of the box when it comes to our society. Recognize some of the "typical" career paths as the traps that they are and figure out a way to achieve your goals without falling into these traps.

Even if you end up going a different path in life, try to recognize this red pill: Debt is Slavery. Debt is one of the means by which modern society keeps you enslaved. Student Loan Debt is even worse, because Student Loan Debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. Your only choice is to either work to pay it off so that you can finally enjoy the fruits of your labor or not pay it off, but in doing so you destroy your ability to shape your reality, as the government will take full control of your life. Your debt is with you regardless of whether you get your dream career or not, which means you may have to take on a job you hate in order to pay your debt, and no one gives a damn how you may feel about having to do that.

Debt is Slavery.

I'd say trade school, you set yourself up on a long and winding road when you can't predict the future, things don't always fall into place perfectly like you might want

You specifically mention prosthetic design in your post as a goal career. If you know that this is something you will enjoy doing, you don't necessarily have to do six years of academic study. Why not attend a trade school that deals with the whole principle of the manufacturing of plastics and metals. If you can specialise in small scale custom orders and then get a technicians job in a company producing them, you will have a much better idea of what works and what doesn't. Or go down the hospital orderly/volunteer route at a VA hospital so that you can learn on the ground from the patients themselves.

Should you still be passionate about it, doing nightschool/correspondence college to get the relevant qualifications would be far more advantageous to an employer than a green college graduate. Plus if you have your head screwed on you'll be paid to learn as you go and have no debt after six years. If you have actually made prosthetics on a shop floor you know what works and possibly how to improve it and/or hearing what patients worst gripes about them are can be factored in.

You may also discover that after two years of trade school, something else might take your fancy instead, as you will be trained more generally you can easily direct those practical skills elsewhere. I'd hate to get six years of college debt only to discover in the first month of a new job I hated it!

Two things. 1 - which one makes more money over your working lifetime - Does the pay more than compensate for the loan? 2 - While all bodies age and start to hurt about 40 having a physically tough job that is brutal on you to do is hell at 40+ that you have to keep doing for another 15 years until retirement.

My thought is that the field of prosthetics is going to rapidly change with 3d printing, the internet, and electrode nerve interfaces. It might be drastically streamlined over the next five years and might become obsolete. Additionally in the states, medical reimbursement will continue to decline
