I belonged to the Facebook group created by the author of this article. She spent 10 years on apps in NYC with years doing first/second date hook ups and finally quit the apps, started a podcast and has a Refinery29 column on being single.

Her accounts of app dating are bleak and brutal. After getting her fill she quit hooking up after a few years and then spent the subsequent years using up substantial swaths of time daily swiping that resulted in (as she says) no return on investment.

She’s in her late 30s now and app free for more than a year. She has a transactional lens and feels that it’s social pressure that caused her 10 years of dating app misery and that it’s her brand now to earn a living by changing the discussion about being single to positive.

She doesn’t have dating or relationship strategies. She wants to create space to feel good about being single. And she still hopes and believes that some day her cosmically ordained partner will appear because she believes that the universe will match her desire as long as she does the inner personal work to attract him.

She’s a capable writer that captures many of the rarely discussed feels about being a single heterosexual woman. She’s also without insight on changing dating outcomes besides just quitting.

Personally, I stopped following her because her insights are really hindered by her belief in middle class domestic happiness with a husband as fundamental. She wants the ring, all the wedding stuff, a house and etc and has yet to examine why any of those things are important.

It’s got some pickme vibes but in the end Sally leveled up and went ahead to pursue her dreams as a happy single lady instead of settling

Something that I don't want to accept but need to accept is that I don't need a partner. I don't need to love someone, I can take all of my love and energy that I so desperately want to give someone else and put it into myself.
