While it's a nice commentary on women, the only way I can interpret this so it isn't lame is he promised himself a beer for achieving something that was important to him. It seems pretty obvious that the trope being exploited is that he was looking at the beer the whole time instead of the girl since he never even acknowledges her at the end.
