Goddamn it's pretty bad out there, except for Quebec. I'm surprised they don't recognize common law marriages out there but I wouldn't be shocked if they changed the laws since that post.

Typically, 1 year, yes. As far as Revenue Canada is concerned, you are common-law starting at 90 days of living together in a marriage-like relationship. According to the department of immigration, it's 1 year. It might depend on which gov't department you are talking to.
