My BF (32 M) moved in with me (26 F) 6 months ago. Currently, he is paying for groceries ($140/mo) and eating out ($120/mo). I am paying for rent/electric/gas/internet ($950/mo). He makes $35k and I make $40k.
Frankly, I thought he will start to contribute to rent after a couple months, but it has been made clear to me that he intends to only contribute to groceries (just like how he did in his parents' home). Also, he has never lived outside of his parents.
Therefore, what is the RIGHT way to bring up the splitting rent/contributing issue?
Ways I think of: - "Hey I was thinking when you like to move out of your parents' place? Would you like to buy a home? Rent outside?"
"I was thinking of moving to an another apartment near here. Since this area is close to our workplaces, do you want to live together? The rent would be xxx"
"After you find your new job in a couple months, let's find you a place to live too. Depending on where it would be, would you like to continue living here, rent someplace out, or live in your parents' place?"
etc. etc.
