It's probably because the guy living with his mom is not used 100% to getting exploited by a a woman. The mom still does cleaning, cooking, even if some chores might be done by the guy. A wife, a girlfriend, a mistress will absolutely go 110% exploit-mode on the man's ass and he must be willing to serve. A guy living with his mom is not set on serve-mode. He is still on preserve mode.

Women don't date guys who don't show visible signs of willingness to work and toil for himself first, so that she may push him to work and toil for her too.

To their defense, a guy living with his wife has been pre-selected by another woman and that makes him more valuable (e.g., he could take care of her and her offsprings). Although not necessarily true (because a guy might still live with parents for many valid reasons), a guy still living with his parents gives off a bad vibe (e.g., why hasn't he ventured to conquer the world and stuff like that). Although I think this might be culture-dependent.

In the US where individualism is a central part of its culture, you're supposed to fend off by yourself and broadcast some sort of independence early on. In other places, such as Latin American, familiar cohesion plays a greater important role than independence to the extent that parents want to keep their children home and raise their grandchildren; they're a few advantages to this: more people usually means more income coming in, grandparents take care of the grandchildren while their adult children are working, children are closer to their parents and sort of doing their part of their social contract, etc. Btw even if the children move out of their parents' house, they usually take their parents with them to their new place. IIRC something similar happens in some Asian countries too.
