Advanced Degrees?

I have a master's that's entirely useless. It depends on your field, of course, but I've observed that it's making connections prior to leaving the workforce that really matters.

Be in good standing with managers and coworkers, get involved in a trade association for your field, maintain contact with former colleagues (just taking them out for a coffee and chat works), volunteer with some well known group in your area. I really wish I had done more of this before I had kids because it's way harder after you have kids.

Having an "in" with people who've worked with you, know you, and like you, makes a big difference.

Some potential options are:

Nursing: you can become an LPN without a ton of additional schooling and the pay is decent
other medical roles that don’t require extensive schooling- ex: phlebotomist, physical therapy assistant, dental hygienist
real-estate agent
mechanical jobs
insurance jobs
IT; you may need additional training/education before you return to the field though, since it’s a field that changes quickly

( I don’t know that much specifically about the degrees required for each career, but most of these can be done with a bachelor’s or associates degrees, and/or a training program that typically does not require more than a year)

My advice is to look into nursing or secondary education, both provide options for advanced degrees and stability.

I have a master's in Mathematics myself. Fully stay at home wife now though. If you are looking to get an advance degree while at home though, you may want to consider math, engineering or computer science. You can take your time and they have the advantage of being more work from home friendly. For example, after getting my math degree, I self taught myself programming languages and could get into that field pretty easily if I ever had too, though I wont be. ^^

I have my RN and did training as a lactation consultant. I completely distain traditional nursing, lactation consultanting was a good fit for me. While my first is little I'm working on a psychology bachelor's degree, with the goal of becoming a therapist actually. That may be a long way down the road, since we plan for a homestead and homeschooling. I'll have a certification as a family life educator, and may make my way creating courses about intentional, connected family life in the modern world. I also did work as a doula I'd love to return to when my children are old enough for the on-call life.

When my babes are grown, I'd totally do a PhD in developmental psychology. I absolutely adore education, but I adore being a mother too, and my education has helped me so much in my motherhood.
