I was in India earlier this year and most mornings I would read the local paper (was in English). I noticed quite a number of articles there that had a very feminist tone to them or were typical feminist subjects. So I could see there's a strong feminist influence creeping into Indian society.

I noticed also, that a lot of the wealthier girls there were becoming very Americanised: very into American girl shows and into consumer culture etc. Which is quite sad.

Western-style Feminism is the last thing India needs... they've already got a messed up sex-ratio (waaaay too many men) and some of the men, desperate have resorted to gang rape and attacking women. Making sex or relationships harder for men there is the last thing you wanna do...

Being divorced is strongly disapproved of, and there is a strong taboo against widows.

And so it should be. You make a promise when you marry: to be together forever. What's the point of that promise if you can't keep it? Although I have to say, with widows it's not their fault.

There is a false belief that advertising and media drive cultural change. That is a misnomer. Advertising and media reflect change.

If this is a popular message in India it is because the populous already affirms this view and this commercial is simply an affirmation of what they already believe.

Although India is a poor country, there is a class of wealthy people and there is a rising middle class with an increasing disposable income. As we know, feminism is a luxury item. You'll notice that feminism is more prevalent in richer states/cities in the US; it's the same principle in India.

correct me if i'm wrong, but india has a pretty rigid caste system right?

i doubt the will affect the elite caste. but it will sure as hell detoriate the middle ones.
