I’m pretty sure the WNBA sells a lot less tickets than the NBA. They definitely don’t have anywhere close to the same revenue. The NBA basically subsidizes the WNBA so their salaries aren’t quite so embarrassingly low.

Their logic is a little more nuanced than just equal pay. I've heard the argument that they think an initial money losing investment in the early years will attract talent and fans and turn profitable down the line as several other pro sports have done.

The difference obviously is that the caliber of play will never match the men's leagues so their idea is untested and highly risky from a business perspective. Also 50% of the population are women. If they're not watching women's sports already who is going to?
