I've got a friend I've known since 1973, when we met at University. We're now old fathers, he's got three kids, I've got two. His younger boy, a teacher, is depressed and sometimes suicidal. I met the lad around twelve years ago. I was working in the south of England at the time, motorcycled up from Kent to meet in Scotland. He was cheerful, looking forward to life. Nine years ago, he started working, then married. His wife got pregnant almost immediately, packed in her own teaching job... and has presented him with a new baby almost every subsequent year. I've honestly lost count. To me, this seems like cause and effect. He hates teaching, would like to try something else, but there's no way out. I know, from bitter experience, that once women have children, they hand out responsibilities like sweets, constantly reminding you of your duties, and are unwilling to gamble on anything. They just want to keep you on the straight and narrow, regardless of what this is doing to your soul. There's going to be such a LOT of this after the lockdown.... a new baby boom, and a world full of men who are dying inside.
