When I lived with a girlfriend a few decades ago, after she moved out when we broke up... my monthly bills decreased almost more than half.

What an eye opener about how much resources the average woman burns just to feel pretty.

It makes enormous sense to make only a small part of a home climate controlled. We've come a long way since the centuries in which homes were just a single room. We have the means to design houses that actually accommodate our lives, but not the will. Apparently entertaining guests is supposed to be a significant feature, but not having homes that are centers for activities or production. More people crashed on my couches back when I was an undergrad.

My goal, for myself, is to construct a home that actually makes sense for our regional environment and climate. The most common homes here appeal to a certain commonplace mentality, but otherwise they don't make sense. It's a little hard to price property effectively when your value system doesn't line up with that of others, and there's no Zillow for people who don't want to be part of a death cult.

If I lived in a dry region, an earthship type home would make perfect sense. As I live in a humid floodplain, which has flooded soils and a lack of hills, a raised home is more practical. That imposes special challenges for incorporating an attached shadehouse, which is the sunny region alternative to the northern greenhouse. The actual differences between a shadehouse and a screened porch are more teleological than physical. Extra layers of modular, or practical gap insulation is the same principle in any design though.

Most of the homes constructed here in the last few decades are built on slabs, usually with materials that are not regionally sourced. The traditional building style for the marsh prairies here is something with a crawlspace, but the concrete pad is the norm in the rest of the country so it has taken over here. Raised pads are becoming more common, and those have been used by local tribes since the Clovis settled down along the rivers, but they have the drawback of creating flood management issues in densely settled areas. The number of homeowners that would need assistance after seasonal floods would an order of magnitude less if the traditional style were used. Just a single cm of water in the home is enough to trigger major gutting and repairs with the building techniques used. The majority of claimants have very shallow flooding, while just a few have really deep flooding, so it's an eminently solvable problem if recalcitrant culture didn't interfere.

In terms of energy efficiency in a wet region, one must forego the advantages of earthen construction, but when the concern most of the year is shedding heat, breeze accommodating designs make sense, or a gapped or reflecting roof. Likewise, you want to have a more friendly attitude towards trees, but also balance the concern of hurricanes. The hardest winds blow in from the same direction as most of the sunlight, usually. Most people try to convert forest to plains like it's their religion, but a thick stand of trees will do better than a thinned plot.

Other options are to make use of ground heat exchangers, wherever they are efficient. I have a couple of relatives who have completely taken the plunge and moved onto houseboats. With those, a more efficient heat exchanger goes directly to the waterline rather than expensively using an air heat exchange pump.

Mannnn, last time I was living with a Bish, she would open window in the winter time for "fresh air". I explained that it's wasting the heat that I pay for, since I'm not a renter I actually pay for it out of my own pocket.

They don't understand that concept of having to pay for their own utilities.
