When I was in grad school I taught a first year medical school course.

There was a guy in his 60s with Doctorate in Pharmacy pursuing medical school just for shits and giggles. He was quite good at it too.

Don't allow normalcy steal from the quality of your life. Do what your heart desires.

I will head back to school in the next 3-4 years to keep my current license and probably just get the next level all at once.

I went back to school in my early 30s. Am now an electrical engineer. Work is better than ever, and I enjoyed being a bad influence on the kids in school. Also, side note, I am saving a shit ton of money by staying single. Women cost a lot.

Good for you. A skill is something you can use even if the company you work for collapses or downsizes, because you can do odd jobs or contract for yourself, right?

Are you going to stain or paint the wood of the cabinets?

I'm retired (60yo). I had a few thinks on my bucket list, and last year went and took Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) class and Chemistry. I won't go back anymore, I'd rather self teach myself subjects.

The CAD class was good, instructor had his own contracting business. Mostly learned Autocad. Which I think would be good to learn a CAD program for your cabinet/woodworking. Autodesk allows people who are hobbyist to download and use Fusion 360 free. Or you could even learn SketchUp which is free.

Chemistry was hard. But it wasn't the subject matter, you have to deal with the brainwashing. Had to watch lengthy videos on gender, and rape. My chemistry teacher was lesbian, so had to hear stories about her wife, and how the pro female soccer team is not paid as good a pro men soccer team. Their was special room in student services (safe space) for the numerous genders that exist today.

At our age, I don't think we have time to waste taking extraneous classes, as college may require. Wouldn't becoming a helper at an actual cabinet shop and learning from youtube videos and reading be a faster way to get up to speed. Unless you've already built your retirement funds from your previous profession, and this is more for fun. But at 55, 4 years is a lot to invest, for what payoff.

30 years ago, sure when the internet wasn't broadly available. School was only choice. But now everything is available. If it's a subject you need to strengthen your self on you like geometry you can even download text books at https://openstax.org/ .

Just my opinion. FYI my background was electronics and computers. But I too have garage full of woodworking tools (overflowing into one of my bedrooms)

Yup, I'm doing my second degree, this time in computer science. I have a post-grad in education too actually, though I can't say it really took me anywhere.

What was your experience?

Och, it's OK, I guess. It's kind of weird being so much older than my classmates, but they're mostly fine, and I just get on with it really. Sometimes I look at them, thinking "jeez, if I'd have had kids, this is what I'd be looking at now!" Uni. is OK. Some of it is very interesting, some of it seems more like 'box-ticking'/'jumping through hoops'. I get pissed off at the shitty facilities though. The labs are really poorly-equipped and in a mess, but what can you do. I complain to IT services, but I'm not holding my breath on them properly sorting it all out.

I'm 59.

Since you already know how to do woodworking, and have made so many things over the past 30 years, then it is obvious to me that you should instead focus on marketing YOURSELF and your skills.

But either way, good for you for asking for a different perspective.
