You compete with other men by simply being good at what you do. That comes from experience, hard work, and understanding your worth.

You need to be able to understand when to shut up and listen, and when you should take the lead to get the job done.

Lead and instruct those below you, and learn from the ones above you so you can either take their job when they move on, or take the equivalent to their job at another location.

Variations on the above can be applied to pretty much every aspect of life. Always push yourself to be better, and always push the people around you to be better than they are.

You can always be better than you are, so can the people around you. That doesn't invalid the progress made so far though, so remember that. Be proud of where you are, and accepting of how far you have to go.

Let the presence of competitors motivate you, but only aim for benchmarks set by yourself, for yourself.

Learn how you can get the others to support your causes and defer to your expertise. Take an interest in their personal and work lives; give and seek input from everyone, and show that you value it. Remain vague with your true intentions if you are using this as a platform for professional advancement.
