I'll tell you this: the Guarding is even most retarded than Huffpost in my opinion. It's like one of those really stupid people who never shut up and you hope that they'll start making sense at some point. They never do and so doesn't the Guardian. It's just a way of raising taxes on productive workers without calling it such because the businesses will be reluctant to hire the idiot for the job. However the government will. Win-win!

You're assuming there is only one doctor or ambulance driver...what do they do now? Does "the" doctor already work 24/7? Those kinds of positions already overlap shifts.

I've known many an business / industry over the last 30 years that have done 40 hours / 10 hour days / 4 day work weeks and it is AWESOME!

Society would probably do a lot better if people worked as little as possible. People only work long hours so they can keep up with the jones. Its just how the conscientious conformists want to do things. IE make everything high status and expensive.

I've seen it being offered as an optional on a few IT teams. Most of them accepted it gladly. I'm just not sure what are the impacts out of the individual level.

I see it as a good thing in the short term. If people can work a 4 day week and still reap the same pay, theyll have more time to enjoy life.

Technology makes it possible, and it could be good, until technology progresses to the point where workers are no longer needed, well t bbj ats a worse problem.

I'm all for a 32 hour workweek but even when its 40 hours most blue collar types with families live at work anyways, taking overtime whenever they can to support their lifestyles. "Work hard, play hard" types.

Just as an anecdote, I am after a position right now that has 4 working days a week. And yes, its 10 hours a day.

For me it will be great. Don't know how it will be for the environment, politics, whatever... They offered it, I want it. My way.

We need surgeons, ambulance drivers, and the others you mention only work 5 days a week yet we need them and have them 7 days a week. They work in shifts. So the 4 day work week fits in perfect with those repressions.

I do question those theories about being better for the environment. They all center around using less resources from things like commuting to and from work. From the professions you gave as examples, someone still have to come into work, just not you. So the resources are still used and there is no benefit for the environment.

The 4 day week is not a new concept. It pops up on the news every decade. One thing that is overlooked is that the work still have to me done. Do the workers get the pay cut or does the employer pay more to have the people do the work you are not doing on day 5? Or do you work 10 hours a day.

The article doesn't address how the 1 day of less work results in less resources being used. How is producing less goods going to help anybody. Everyone, employees and employees will be making less money.

Sorry, I just see the same unproved claims every time talk of the 4-day work week is resurrected.

40 hr/wk x 20 workers= 800 man hrs

32 hours/wk x 25 workers = 800 man hrs

In the US in the late 19th century people worked 6 days x 12 hrs a day to earn a standard salary... unions fought for a 40 hour work week and won. Over a couple decades, we can reduce the standard work week as productivity increases without a decrease in standard of living provided people are actually fighting for it. It has happened before.

Possible? YES, definately.

Likely? well.. it depends. Multiple ways you can go about it:

pay for performance. No hours no scheduled, just measurable deliverables
40 hours in 4 days, or something similar
goofing off on day 5

I have a consulting gig where everyone goofs off on Fridays. Today for the first time I "worked from home" I did have 1 meeting, postponed another one (internal meeting) and exchanged a few emails throughout the day. So I am doing #3.
