Why Reddit’s apathy to years of misogyny yet rage over jokes about men proves that society still has a long way to go

I notice that on Reddit there are numerous subs that regularly harass, degrade, and generalize women (such as MGTOW, theredpill, kotakuinaction, mensrights, etc.) yet Reddit’s userbase has done little to even criticize them, except for subs dedicated to combating bigotry on the site such as AHS. Yet when someone posts a single jokey comment about men the backlash can be brutal, going as far as harassment campaigns and brigading. It is clear that while there are plenty of great men out there misogyny is still quite normalized in our culture and in fact in the post-GamerGate age I’d actually argue it’s worse than five years ago. Our society still has a long, LONG way to go in combating systemic sexism and systemic misogyny.

So yeah, Reddit has a largely misogynistic atmosphere. The scary thing is Reddit isn’t even as bad as other message boards with misogyny. The hatred and generalization of women is so engrained in our culture that there is misogyny even in places that are supposed to be against it.

I really appreciate this sub posting example of how normalized the hatred of women is in our culture. I’ve always considered myself a feminist but it wasn’t until the past year or so that I began to realize just how widespread misogyny really is. It’s so widespread most people are simply used to it-women simply get used to being sexually harassed and men simply get used to viewing harassment of women as a “guy thing.” It’s scary.
