The title is a little misleading, they are being charged for unlawfully using the school computer system which the mother had access to as an assistant principal. Beyond casting fraudulent votes (sounds familiar...) they also accessed over 300 student profiles.

Thanks for this while I agree it is sh*tty I didn't understand how this is a crime. Expulsion at most lol

"The mother-daughter-duo were arrested and booked at Escambia County Jail on one count each of offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks, and electronic devices, a third-degree felony; unlawful use of a two-way communications device, a third-degree felony; criminal use of personally identifiable information, a third-degree felony; and conspiracy to commit these offenses (a 1st degree misdemeanor)."

See now this makes sense thank you. I'm all about denying a pass but I didn't see how this was proportional.
[–]eltronzi 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They might be able to track on additional charges if any of the crimes were committed on school property.
[–]eltronzi 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sorry, but fuck no. Mommy has a job paid for by tax dollars and she utilizes her position to access personal information to use with ill intent? Maybe not the biggest deal in the world to you personally but what about the other affected students? The whole school dance king/queen bullshit needs to go as well but that's a whole other conversation.
[–]bmoney_14 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Man even then to be facing 16 years when rapists have gotten 5. I get accessing student info is invasive but this isn’t some hipaa violation and they know your medical history, the worst they could see are addresses and grades maybe.
These bitches are scummy no doubt but this is fucking ridiculous. Just embarrassment alone I would move states.

Yeah this doesn't seem like a measured response. Also where is the jailtime for facebook and equifax and all these other internet companies leaking millions of people's personal details?
[–]HIPPAbot -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's HIPAA!
[–]bmoney_14 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ok..
[–]GlutonForPUNishment 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
OKAY... THIS makes more sense than just sending a teen to jail for rigging a HC queen vote. Honestly glad to know there was more to it
[–]LanderG34 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I agree they should be punished but 16 years in jail? Jails are already over crowed with people that dont belong in there, give them like 2 years of community service picking up trash in the florida heat or something. Dont put them on tax payer dime
Never mind, I read the article, I take it back
[–]lethalmanhole[S] 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Punish the mom for abusing her position in the school if that's how they "hacked" the student accounts.
[–]LanderG34 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah after I saw the hacking student accounts part I say throw them in the same dark cell and toss the key.
[–]Ibraheem_moizoos 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thank you all for giving me the gist of why they got so much time. I'm more of a headline reader, myself.

same

can anyone help us non yanks understand what a homecoming queen is?
Do you get a cash prize or something of monetary value, like a car parking space or something that would make it worth winning?
or is it just a giant popularity contest and you just win "bragging rights"
I really hope its bragging rights only, because to risk 16 years in jail for that is absolutely hilarious.
[–]ManaPot 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's exactly it, just bragging rights. 16 years is insane for this (and hilarious). They're literally facing more than some pedophiles do... Crazy.
[–]RC_COW 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When it affects women the sentences are harsher. So rigging the vote and causing a girl to miss out on being homecoming queen thats damn near electric chair worthy
[–]SandorYarpClegane 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Lmao. Life is over before she could even start it... over being homecoming Queen.
[–]Uncommon_Sence 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They should have carjacked and killed a male Uber driver, then they would have only gotten a couple of years.
[–]stephen89 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Actually their plea deal is that neither of those kids who killed that uber driver will ever step foot in a prison cell.
[–]ManagementPlane5283 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Whaaat? I mean don't get me wrong I love seeing a pussy pass denied as much as anyone on this sub but getting prison time for rigging a stupid school popularity contest is fucking ridiculous. So much so I'm having a hard time believing this is real.
Edit: Okay I commented before reading the comments. I get it now.

[–]NarutoBoy87 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This gets 16 years.. But Mr. Anwar the uber driver killes recently by two girls essentially go free..
[–]Credible_Cognition 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Funny how the two girls who murdered an Uber driver got very minimal punishment, while rigging a homecoming election can get up to 16 years in prison.
[–]queen_nefertiti33 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
How is this even punishable by law lol it means nothing
[–]AKVigilante 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Read the article.
[–]Menloand 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They were accessing the private info of like 300 students but the homecoming queen rigging makes for a better title.
[–]stephen89 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How is this even a crime? What?
[–]Menloand 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They illegally accessed the private info of like 300 students
[–]curiousquotes 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This isn’t a pussy pass.
[–]lethalmanhole[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Exactly. It was denied.
[–]curiousquotes 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, you don’t understand what a pussy pass is, because there is no pussy pass here.
