I’m in barber school and every night, the educators walk around and ask students to clean something. They are allowed to do this because they claim it “teaches us how to clean when we own our own salon” and that it’s “part of the curriculum”.

The activities are always assigned by the educators. Students must either fold towels, sweet the floor, wipe down counters, refill shampoo bottles, or collect the garbage.

Most of the girls at this school, fold five towels and leave. Or they’ll clean only their station and leave. Meanwhile, the same educator has been asking me to collect all 13 garbage bags from around the school every night, while the girls all tag team the towels. I asked her why she makes me do the trash whenever she is there, but doesn’t ask anyone else to help or to do the trash instead; She said that I have to do the trash because I’m the only guy, and that women shouldn’t have to do the trash.

The other night, I told her that it’s unacceptable for her to ask me to do the trash every night, just because I’m a man. I said I’m happy to help with cleaning, but I’m done doing the garbage by myself every night because of my gender.

Am I being dramatic, and should I just do the trash to be a gentleman? Or am I standing up for what’s right?
