Local Children's Hospital reports steady increase in child abuse-related trauma
"Children's Hospital Colorado reports that child abuse is now the second-highest cause for children to come to their emergency department, reporting that the numbers continue to rise month-over-month since the pandemic began. Non-accidental trauma, or child abuse, accounts for 11.7% of the trauma cases seen at the hospital."
Colorado has seen a influx of child abuse in recent years, but in 2020 hotlines to report child abuse saw a significant decrease in reports starting in March when remote learning started. Yet our hospitals are seen a rise in child abuse related injuries in their emergency rooms. In 2019 the child abuse tip hotline in Colorado reported they had seen an record breaking amount of child abuse reports in 2018, unfortunately I cant find any more recent data.
April Jenkins is a Children Youth and Family Services Intake Manager for DHS. She says she has been a decrease in cases but a increase of severity. When faced with working children who have been seriously injured and hospitalized because of injuries caused by abuse she had this to say:
"It's very sad. It's very concerning," Jenkins said. "It's also evidence that the families in our community are having a hard time and they're really stressed and they're really struggling."
"Jenkins emphasized that the Department of Human Services is focused on preserving families as much as possible, and helping them thrive. They offer a plethora of services available for parents and families who might be struggling."
A Social Worker for Childrens Hospital had this to say about the rise in cases
"The impact of the pandemic has been widespread as we experience a number of stressors, including children being out of school or out of daycare, we see parents and families that have lost their employment or they're facing housing insecurity, all of those things lead to an increase in family stress that can come out in unhealthy ways at different times,"
DHS and CPS are focused on preserving families, I can tell you from my own experience. While that's fine and a good goal to have, their first priority should be preventing kids being hurt. Yet time and time again I see kids in my state being abused and should be removed from the home but are put in family preservation services. I reported physical, verbal, and sexual abuse as well as neglect. It took them over two weeks to talk to me and about another 2 weeks to talk to my custodial parent. Once the social workers were manipulated into thinking I was crazy and incompetent they dismissed the case, putting us in family preservation therapy that only half the family participated in. They are so focused on preserving the family, they are enabling abuse.
CPS and DHS need to stop trying to salvage the family and focus on protecting kids, their parents, and the community. The longer they focus on "preserving the family" the longer they're actually preserving the abuse.

What does this have to do with men's rights specifically?

Pick any of your heroes, or any person that you believe achieved greatness as a person or in their field. If any biography is available take a look and see what 'abuse' they suffered. Were they physically, verbally, and or (by todays standards) sexually abused? Were they neglected?
Can you find anyone of note who was raised in the sheltered, coddled, bubble-wrapped manner that you and others of your stripe somehow seem to think all children require?
Do you have any reason to believe, other than someone told you so, that healthy adults can be produced by by raising children in padded rooms?

Okay but pick any of these role models that suffered abuse. How many of them turn to drugs, are depressed, have self esteem problems, or have some form of mental illness/disorder? I can't think of one who hasn't.
I'm not saying we need to never expose children to the harshness of the world, that we shouldn't be hard on them sometimes. What I am saying is there shouldn't be children being admitted to the hospital because they were so beat up from abuse related injuries.
Providing a safe space for children, nurturing, guiding them, and giving them some tough love is what creates functional adult. You shouldn't spoil a kid, they cant get everything they want. They have to learn early on that's just not possible. We shouldn't let kids get away with wrongdoing. We should guide them and enforce ideas with non violent punishments. For example, when I did something my dad explained why we dont do that the first couple of times, but if I continued, I was punished. I'd have to clean up whatever mess I made or the most effective was the quarter trick. Id have to hold a quarter by my nose to the wall for a minute or so. As a kid, it was HELL. I could NEVER do it on my first try. And it was effective! I never did whatever I was being punished for again.
Abuse of any kind in childhood can have life long effects depending on the child, the abuse, and the circumstances. Children who had more than one or two adverse childhood experiences (which is a pattern of traumatic events during childhood) are more vulnerable to serious, chronic medical problems into adulthood. Children who experienced more than 4 adverse childhood experiences are at risk of pre mature death.
Children dont need pain to learn. Children need love. Children need a safe space to get support. Violence teaches and does nothing but harm.

My own experience is of course quite limited. I have more questions than answers, but it is clear to me that no one knows 'what children need' because no one is successfully raising them to anything like 'healthy'.
I am very skeptical of this - maybe it's true. I really do not quite believe that people who wad never experienced abuse or any trauma were found, and in such numbers that any kind of valid statement like that can be made.
My self I was raised in abject midwestern poverty. It was a horror of deprivation that I really believe has been eradicated from the western world. The only real poverty is poverty of the spirit, if you ask me but that's just because of my own experience.
Disagree. You and I will never co-parent any children so we have no reason to try and convince each other, not that we ever could.

Heres a link from the CDC talking about ACEs and their health effects
Heres a study showing the people with ACEs are at risk for premature death.)
Here is an article from the APA about the damage of corporal punishment
Dude I dont wanna co parent with you, I dont need you. Have you actually been a parent yet? I actually have been a mother as well as the caretaker of many kids. And I will tell you, HITTING DOES NOTHING. When you hit a kid now they wont listen. They're just scared, confused why they were hit, confused why they hurt, and uncomfortable. That's like a teacher trying to teach a student an important subject when they really have to pee, they're not going to be able to listen or learn because of how bad they gotta go. Most kids will understand why we dont do certain things if you explain it to them. And if they dont, there are plenty of ways other than raising a hand to teach them.
I'm sorry to hear you were raised in poverty. I was raised in poverty conditions too, I know the horrifying deprivation of wondering "When will I eat next and where will it come from?" But I have to disagree with you, I think physical deprivation is the worst kind. We all have a pyramid of needs, and physical needs like safety, food, clothes, water, things like that are at the bottom. Spiritual needs are in the middle of the pyramid, important to building a person's needs, but not the foundation. If you have physical needs met, at least you're alive. If your only spiritual needs are met, well you're woke but now you're dead because you starved.
