Why not both do these things. Nowadays it's anyway difficult to take care of a family with one salary, so probably both are working. Cleaning is done probably once a week, the kids are at school or daycare while parents work, cooking can be done on alternating principle. I mean, if you want to have a family and care for your people you have to make compromises. We all do these things alone when we are single, anyway. If one of the partners is not working at the moment, then it's different, of course.

Things are not so simple, anymore. My friend is a great cook; his wife is a self-confessed horrible cook who is a nursing professor at a college. They have 3 adult children, living on their own.

They hired a cleaning woman because they both hate cleaning. My friend does the laundry, folds clothes, buys groceries, etc because he does the cooking. makes sense, right? He is a psychologist that works out of the home.

They both contribute financially to everything and just work it out so it suits them. It's nobody else's business, namely yours or mine.

Societal expectations are deviating from practices of the past. Dual income families are the norm today, unlike yesteryears where it was typically the men who solely provided for the household. If both parties are contributing financially, it is only reasonable for both to undertake responsibilities pertaining to domestic chores and caregiving duties.

What I find worrisome is that parity in all conceivable aspects is increasingly becoming the purported ideal with regards to the notion of equal partnership.

Different tasks and functions are naturally distributed among partners and family members and how they are assigned depend on the context of each family and qualities of the individuals, such as the level of competency and interest in their roles as well as their routines, such as occupational commitments etc. The vast majority of familial arrangements are devised for the collective interest of the household.

I find no ill in any kind of familial arrangements, so as long such arrangements are mutually agreed between partners. Ideally, partners are continuously examining and fine-tuning their arrangements to adapt to any change in circumstances.

One thing is what you see in the news, another is how it works in real life. The friends I have with kids figure out how they want to run the household and they share equally in the responsibilities. I really don't see that as a problem.
