She called his male ego fragile despite it objectively being extremely strong lmao, I swear they can twist any male behavior as fragile. The guy could've used a maternal influence certainly, but he acted like most older men would in that situation even if he felt conflicted about it. "Opening up" is often a trap, especially in younger relationships. She could just be venting about her mom, in which case he didn't have any way to act that would satisfy her. If he did cry, would she be less attracted to him? It's possible his stoicism is why she is attracted to him in the first place.

His father taught him right but failed to teach him how to do emotional controll. Sports at young age would have helped him to become strong instead of strong silent. I don't recommend men to open up. It will be used against them in their promotion and will be seen as incapable to handle intensive situations as they are seen as fragile.

Society wants men to open up not to offer help but because of curiosity. In the end they are judged.

Being seen to hold back tears is a way of expressing emotion. It doesn't always have to be pedal to the metal.

Crying at his girlfriend's mother's funeral would have been seen to be out of place and attention-seeking, even if he was crying for his girlfriend's mother. If he was crying not out of sympathy with his girlfriend's family, but because something had been unlocked in his own therapeutic process, that would have been even more inappropriate.

I spent the whole story thinking "what movie is this from?". Maybe it was Harold and Maude, where the weird lost boy goes to strangers' funerals. But of course there are too many films to list about a buttoned-up boy being coaxed out of his shell by a perky girl, or finding a replacement family for his cold parental home.

That might be because the whole account is a COVID young-adult fiction-writing project. That theory is reinforced for me by some of the other stories on the account, for example where the hero and heroine get revenge on their bullies.

The other possibility is that when men go into therapy, they create a fictional version of their own upbringing. Maybe a kid born in 1998 was brought up by a throwback drill instructor father, but if they have a TV and and a Reddit account and they go to school, they'd have learned the same female-centric therapeutic vocabulary as everyone else. You've never heard a woman try to shame a man for his quote-unquote "male ego". Really?

I remember my kids (2 girls and 1 boy) saying to me that they never see me cry. I'm a single parent, I'm the main role model for how my kids will feel about men. Their mother left them when my youngest was 2. My oldest daughter is gay and my son is a mad at women. I can't help but wonder how not having a female role model has impacted them? Anyways, I realized that they need to know that its ok to cry. Especially my son. When my dog passed away, I made sure that they saw me crying. And I cried for days. I'm English/German, showing emotions does not come easy to me. We're not known to be huggers. But I'm getting better at it.
