I agree with you. But you know how news works, they're probably going for the fame angle. A famous footballer is way more interesting than some plainjane wife.

Don't know if anyone one else noticed the story doesn't mention how her arm became injured? You learn more about what's happening from what the news doesn't say, rather than what it does.

Edit: spelling

They do in the final few paragraphs, I don't believe they know the exact cause.

"It was the woman’s first time in custody and she required treatment for her arm injury which she received on January 25, her defence lawyer told the court."

It should be noted that the fire was started on the 25th as well. Her entire arm from shoulder to wrist was bandaged, and I imagine it's a burn injury sustained from the flash over when she lit the fire likely with some kind of accelerant that has vapourised prior to being lit.

I'm not at all trying to diminish what the football star did or the public response to what happened, it was an awful act of violence and murder, and I think the public's response and the coverage of the incident was exactly what is needed.

My issue is that the same coverage isn't given to a very similar event, there was very little public outrage, and when asking if people had heard about this, the majority of people had not, while the "footy star who burnt his wife and kids to death" is known by almost everyone around Australia.

Isn't that mainly because of the profiles of the people involved

[–]armed_renegade[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That could possibly be the case, however, that doesn't seem to be what it is, and I imagine if some non famous guy did the same thing, it would get very similar publicity, because the focus in the media and in society, wasn't his status, but rather what a atrocity it was and murder in generally is relatively rare in Australia, with a small population and a decently low murder rate.

And some difference in the outrage would be expected especially when the death of children is involved, but most people just don't know that there were 2 cases prior to this in the weeks and months leading up to this event where two husbands/boyfriends were murdered under very similar circumstances. And this just causes even more of a divide in societies perception of what goes on. We hear most if not all cases of male on female domestic violence murder, but rarely about the other side, which causes the community to perceive that violence rarely if ever befalls men from their partners, which just isn't true.

And even if you try to bring attention to it, on its own, and not as a response to someone talking about men killing women, you still get people saying, well that doesn't matter because it happens to women so much more.

I don't have the link handy, but there was also a second man burnt to death by his wife/female partner in the months before the high-profile case where the man burned his wife & kids in the car.

Just as with this story, you hear nothing about that second poor guy. There were only a handful of brief stories written about his murder too, all quickly forgotten.

Yeah I do recall there being another as well.

Got into an argument with a woman on facebook when she said something to the effect of this doesn't happen to men, I linked her this story, which she obviously didn't know about, and she said it doesn't count, because she didn't also burn her children to death. Which I find shocking. I have no problem admitting that women are more often killed by men than the other way around, and that men are usually by their biological nature, stronger and larger than their wifes/girlfriends, but the narrative has been pushed so far to one side, that some people aren't even aware that men still die at the hands of their wives and girlfriends, are still injured by their wives and girlfriends, and that it isn't just all DV murder is male on female, and never female on male. That's not even including the indirect deaths of men who are driven to kill themselves.

Just kind of sick of the one side reporting, and the one sided outrage. Murder, especially intimate partner murder should outrage anyone, regardless of the victim or perpetrators gender or genitals. And when people only see the man on woman violence and death, then it seems like that's all there is when there isn't.

Could also be that the footballer murdered his children as well. Which pulls at those that have children, and a wider narrative than the wife and husband.

I must say though, without knowing any details surrounding the incident with the Husband and wife, I feel very fortunate that this wasn't me as we were introduced to each other by a mutual friend. And her next partner was Daniel Surtees, the man she killed.
