The part about the ring being expensive ist an american thing. In Europe you pay around 200 to 1000 €.

It's interesting how the willingness to spend 3 months salary on worthless rock is something men are expected to do to prove their love, but no one ever expects women to spend anything like this.

But of course it is women who are oppressed and men who are privilieged /s

The whole hetrosexual courting custom, from initiation to wedding, is all about the elevation of women and the demeaning of men. It would be nice to get true gender equality in that.

Most of the traditions around engagement rings come from marketing campaigns by diamond companies in the early 1900s (or late 1880s?).

A diamond is just another form of carbon, one of the most abundant elements on earth. Scientists have been making synthetic diamonds for years.

I agree the "tradition"is bs but that's also something you need to speak up about. I made my wife a necklace instead of buying a ring.
