It's been scientifically proven that games don't actually have anywhere near the psychological effects people claim, stop peddling these myths. Games do not cause mass shootings, they don't cause sexism and they aren't 'addictive' if something is going wrong with somebody who plays games it's another issue. As far as I'm concerned games are nothing more than an easy scapegoat for people to blame who don't want to admit to the real issues in society.

It's kind of like when so many people go around asking questions like why are there so many guys who are single losers and don't go out much or ask women out? They don't want to fucking admit there's a really big problem out there and just want to pretend it's purely the fault of the men and not the society they were brought up in.

If you can’t be a real-life hero, there’s always a video game.

Pathetic, but it rings true for some.

To me, the real trick is to be your own hero. Don’t look for validation from others, but within yourself.

Everyday when I wake up in the morning, I can look myself in the mirror and say, “You’re doing pretty good.” I work hard to make my life the best it can be.

If you look yourself in the mirror, and the guy staring back at you looks like he needs to be saved...

Be a hero and save him.

Or it's just some escapism, and we live in a world where escapism is a valued commodity.

My wife sat for nearly 12 hours on her duff on the couch last weekend because she was burned out, watching TV and playing games on her tablet. I played some Fallout 4 for a few hours and then cleaned the house around her.

Society would look at our days very differently. I doubt she'd be considered a video game addict, even though she probably tripled my time in my game.

It might not just be about " BE something else". I'm no scientist or great thinker but I do have a couple of thoughts on the subject.

It could be a way to satisfy an instinctual need to use, train or maintain hand eye coordination.
A way to achieve a sense of accomplishment that might not be available in their everyday real world lives. For instance killing a specific number or type of NPC's to get a trophy or unlock a new skin or weapon upgrade.
It could be a way to exercise control that they don't have outside of the game. Because of teachers/school, bosses or family exerting a major amount of control over the gamer's day to day activities.

Though honestly I think the reason will run a whole gambit of things we have and haven't thought of.

Behavioral addictions are relatively new and include things like gaming, tanning, gambling, and shopping. Though there seem to be gender preferences in the specific addiction (boys and gaming), there doesn't seem to be enough research to really determine if one gender is more susceptible to behavioral addiction than the other. I would also imagine some of the risk factors of drug addiction, like exposure and access, might influence the specific addiction one succumbs to (ex: gaming historically being marketed to and socially accepted for boys).
