Unpopular opinion (probably):

Telling people to stop crying in the appropriate moment can be important. It takes a level of intelligence to know that moment, but generally speaking there are situations fit for self-reflection and self-pity as a way of calibrating your own moral compass and releasing the pent up stress in yourself... And there are places where you should steel yourself.

I remember in martial arts class there was this reaaaaaally unathletic kid. The coach was mocking him and yelling at him for messing up. I was paired up with the kid, and I saw that he started crying. I told him in a kind of firm voice that he should stop crying, and instead focus on the exercise - that's the only way he can get better. And later he can cry. When he finally managed to do it right, I gave the kid one of those handshake-pull-into-hug things, and complemented him. He seemed better. Afterwards the coach explained to him why he is yelling, and overall, the whole thing worked out. If he just quit right then and there, he would never have advanced, and would never have grown as a person. Sometimes it IS necessary to "man up". I know it has a negative connotation here, but that's only because it is often used as a way of shaming people into doing certain things. "Manning up" is often important. It just takes some level of empathy and social awareness to recognize when it's OK to expect someone to stop crying, and when it is time to cry.

I disagree. Crying can be an emotional outlet and may be good for the mental health. But never cry in public. If needed, cry in private, with your partner or a trusted friend, or with a psychological professional. There's a good chance it'll backfire.

Nah, I don't believe that. It's a fundamental skill - not only for boys, but girls too - to master their emotions and be able to control them when it's necessary. Obviously, everybody has the urge to cry when feeling sad or to be aggressive when feeling angry. However, this urge has to be mastered, and directed into something meaningful and useful for you.

What will you do after getting fired from a job? cry all over and punch a pillow because you were taught it was ok to do? Obviously not; it might cause some relief on you, but doing only this is a bad long term solution. What you want is to put this aggressiveness into the search of another job, maybe, so you can make your life somehow better. This also applies to children: obviously some of them has the urge to cry, and sometimes it's important to do it for mental health, but it still is a bad long term solution, depending on the problem the kid is facing. If they feel dumb because they are bad at something, let's say, math, it's important to put this frustration into their improvement; which is much better than only crying and feeling a little better.
