I [M22] was dressed in a particular stylish way at work, and jokingly said that I look like [x male celebrity] due to the style of my suit. One of my coworkers [F22] said, “yeah, but you’re not as attractive, sorry”, in front of everyone. Now, I’m actually a decently attractive guy, at least from what I’ve heard from people around me. But yeah, I’m not as ‘hot’ as [x male celebrity], and that’s OK. But why does my attractiveness matter in a professional workplace! Regardless of whether I’m a hottie or whether I look like a sack of potatoes, no one has the right to comment on my ‘attractiveness’. I felt objectified and disrespected and embarrassed. I handled it confidently and deflected it, saying, “I mean [x male celebrity] is really good looking, I’ll give you that” but I felt so bad inside. I felt worse because if I said that to her (she’s a woman and she’s overweight), I would get in massive trouble. But somehow, no one batted an eye when she said it to me! Regardless of gender or sex, no one should be getting unprofessional comments on their attractiveness in a workplace. Thoughts?
