Crosspost "Older people and (hetero) marriage: who really benefits?" from /r/GenderCritical:
I was at the grocery store and saw a miserable looking older man pushing a shopping cart. I wondered if he was a widower. It occurred to me that: 1. men I had known of who lost their wives lost someone who took care of the household and made sure they went to the doctor, and thus seem unanchored. 2. I have known several women who never wanted to remarry after losing their husbands. A friends mom says if she lost her husband she would never marry because she tried it once and it’s too much work. 3. In working with older male patients in long term disease remission, I have noticed their wives do so much of the remembering appointments and medication schedule for them. I think the wives are a large part of the reason these men are still alive.
This makes it very interesting that women are taught to value marriage as if it determines our self worth, whereas some men dodge marriage and want to play the field. It seems so backwards.
Thoughts?
