There's no penalty for putting whatever name you want on the birth certificate as the father, and no proof required.

There's no requirement that you be the biological parent of the child or even be married to the mother to be required to pay child support.

You can be dating a single mother who has a biological child before you met her, and be judged to be the parent, and be required to pay child support for that child even if the court knows that it isn't your child.

Never ignore a court summons for this stuff. Always spend the money to get an attorney. If you make a mistake here it could cost you $300,000.00 - so the minor pain of $2k for an attorney - well, consider it money well spent.

I had a custody battle over a child of mine and I watched so many guys walk into court without an attorney and just get annihilated. They'd end up paying all of the expense of being a father and not get parenting time or custody time, or get screwed in the amount of child support.

The mother gets a free attorney in the form of the prosecuting attorney, who is there to collect money for the state. They advise and help the mother with the legal process. The father gets screwed. If you're in a courtroom you should have an attorney.

In some states, there is no legal obligation to inform someone that they have been listed as the father. Also, if you do not contest being listed as the father in a timely manner, it stands. Obviously, this system is designed for abuse.

Part of the reason the courts are so rabid about this kind of thing is because they know that like 70% of welfare recipients are single mothers. So if they can't get someone to pay for a single mother, the State has to shoulder the bill. If they can throw someone under the bus in order to keep the State from paying, they'll do it.

This is so easy to fix. Have another baby and put either the senator's, congressman's, or judges name on the birth certificate. Bet the law will be changed rather quickly.
