Her work searches for the truth along with a hard-fought decency, a belief that figures the mass media may vilify still contain a core of humanity. She sees this notion of empathy as a foundation of the true crime genre currently dominant in American culture, maybe even the secret ingredient that’s made it so recently ubiquitous. If the people would only look past the kneejerk rage that the Carter case inspires on first glance, they’d be wounded by the same pain that drew Carr to this sordid tale – a pain emanating from both sides, outward in every direction.

“True crime has a way of creating a visceral, physical reaction,” Carr firmly states. “There’s nothing like hearing about other people’s hurt. We’re herd animals, and we don’t want to see other people hurting. It’s like sports, with built-in stakes that you get invested in. This is a story about human beings, people also struggling with mental health issues will see it, and so we have to make sure to be compassionate while reporting on scandal.”

This article is pretty scattershot, but apparently...

  1. It was the news that distorted everything.
  2. Michelle Carter was as much a victim as Roy.
  3. America need to show empathy for Michelle Carter.

Its the guardian. I'm pretty sure they always read data then write up an analysis or opinion that contradicts every possible accurate conclusion of those facts.

[–]tenchineuro 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, but the writing is worse here than usual. At first we learned that there's more too it than the media reported, media distortion, she's as much a victim as him, etc...

I had expected the original claims to be supported and my expectations were never met.

This is a very unsatisfying read.

"kneejerk rage"? Right. Hard pass on this "documentary".

[–]gonnagetu 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you’d rather be enraged about here say than hear the facts presented in court?sorry to say this is what’s wrong with America

I don't even need to read this to know it's going to make excuses for her. Am i right?

My ex did this exact same fucking thing to me, and to this day still thinks I'm the one who hated her and wanted her to die. It's fucking ridiculous.

My ex was deeply mentally unwell, borderline and probably schizophrenic, but refused to take meds or follow through with any help. She just went on about how men had it better and she was just a victim. She used it all to dismiss her abuse of me as actually her trying to handle my alleged abuse of her. The shit she made me do, made me watch... two + years of ptsd and only just now fading.

Feminist thinking makes life so much harder for the mentally unstable, and the female privilege it perpetuates encourages this shit. Guarantee this woman still sees herself as a victim.

Also this article is gross, but not so much as this director. She's a predator, just the way she describes true crime as empathizing with the murderer is just... so gross and fucked up. Whatever her reasons, she is a murderer. Justifications don't change the reality. This woman is a murderer whether she was deluded or not, and should be vilified, because unlike so many false accusations, this one actually happened and had consequences.

Yikes

[–]chamon- 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Mental illness is a thing you know...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yup. I'm mentally ill as well. Doesn't excuse abuse regardless of gender.

[–]chamon- 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, but theres different degrees of mental illness (not downgrading yours or mine) especially if left untreated.

IMO nothing will ever excuse abuse or murder.

And to make things clear im not sympathizing with the girl. I just don’t agree how the media portrays her and the case as if she did this just for pure enjoyment and evil.

She was clearly psychologically ill. Both of them.

Also, that thing with your ex gf sucks., sorry for that. I know how hard is when someone refuses to takes their meds. Mental illness is a bitch...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

That's fair, I missed your point. She definitely isn't evil, I don't think anyone really is when it comes down to it, and there is definitely something to be said about rehabilitation over punishment. I was/am probably conflating the too and letting it be personal...

I'm mostly offended by the way I see people jump on the insanity defence any time women do something terrible (anecdotal I know). You're still capable of doing evil and acting maliciously when you're sick, and you are responsible for your actions to a degree, even if you are doing so under delusions. At the very least such people should be quarantined and treated until they are able to take responsibility.

Idk. I am more emotional than rational a lot of the time and I probably jumped on the bandwagon here. What I'm worried about is they'll just let her walk with no consequences, and this movie will campaign for that. Whether she is found criminally responsible or not, she needs time away so this doesn't happen again, either to heal from whatever is making her this way, or isolate her if it IS intentional murder.

My ex is... fucked up. She is self aware too, which is why I can't really forgive her. She'd have moments of clarity where she'd look at me and describe exactly what she was doing and why it was wrong, but never had any intention of changing it. She is a hateful person who chooses the fantasy over reality, and as much as mental illness pushed her to that decision, she still made it, and that is her failing. In this case as well, I think this woman is responsible to some degree, and that needs to be addressed, but how... idk.

Just don't want to see her walk away scottfree, and then have a crooked documentary about how none of it was her fault and actually it was men who were the bad guys. Because that is exactly what my ex did, what the school did to me about her, and what seems to happen every frickin time women do something terrible. She is a predator, in her right mind or not, and we don't need a documentary telling us how actually she's a sweet person and the victim and her victim's suicide was his own fault actually.

[–]KidsInTheSandbox 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly the documentary was solid in presenting both sides of the argument. After watching part 1 I was part of the "she deserves way more prison time" crowd.

After watching part 2 I actually felt sorry for her because she started off as a nice girl who meant well but got sucked into Conrad's darkness and his obsession with suicide. She would text "please don't ever think about killing yourself" but he kept romanticizing suicide over the course of 1.5 years. Michelle was terrified of being alone and was clingy to the point where school friends would tell her to take it down a notch. It's truly a tragic story and in no way is she the way media portrayed her. Imo 18 months in prison is fair.

female privilege...? Lmao

Also this case has literally nothing to do with feminism, it’s pretty obvious at this point that you’re try to push some agenda. Take your weird incel opinions back to the garbage dump.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wow you're a piece of shit.

[–]jameswalker43 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

being able to put yourself in someone’s shoes is a real sign of character and requires effort

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Have a look through her comment history, she just makes fun of people and is a generally a racist, heterophobic dick. That's what I said wow about. Cause she appears to be a total piece of shit.

Also I do have empathy... For the man this woman murdered. He doesn't get to get better, because of her.
