In fairness, don't Japan have a seriously problem with women being groped on public transport, especially during rush hour?
Also, these women only cars aren't legally binding. Men are just asked not to use them during rush hour.

yes, yes it does. Groping on trains is a very bad issue in Japan because of how tightly packed the passengers are. When perverts grope people, they don't even have enough space to move or get away from them if they could because of how tight it is. In fact, its so tight that people don't even notice such groping happening.

ehh, there would be very few. I don't think most sane women would willingly sit by themselves in a car where there are so many men and so few fellow women.

That assumes that cars that don’t bare a “men only” sticker would still be used by men only through default of women having the choice of a “women only” car. The point is that the women have the choice of a female only car but they’re still free to use cars that don’t bare any sticker, so there are no men only cars unless they get a sticker too.

this isn't about america though. There is an actual real gender disparity in groping in Japanese trains. Women need these cars, and I really don't think men need their own. coming from a guy here.

I can’t find anyone mentioning America? I’m in the comment thread and I’m not American but held similar views to the others. But let’s transpose anyway...I’m curious: let’s say we’re not in Japan and instead we’re in London and we’re on the tube. The majority of the people doing the pickpocketing are ethnically Romanian. Do we say: ‘Okay, we have a problem of pickpocketing on the tube. Studies show the vast majority committing these crimes are Romanian. Let’s create a car that operates with a binary: you’re either ethnically Romanian or you’re not. And we say anyone who isn’t ethnically Romanian can use this car.’ One would hope that proposal would be shot down. There are protected characteristics which mean you can’t segregate a service but you can segregate a facility. Toilets are facilities and are generally segregated. Domestic violence shelters are a facility and are generally segregated by gender. There are some services that are segregated but as times change in the modern world those are becoming fewer and fewer. I can’t help but feel were a trans person FTM living in Japan and I had gone through the lengthy procedure of reassigning my gender I’d feel quite hurt by the assumption I wasn’t allowed in a carriage for fear, now that I was legally a man, I’d sexually assault someone. A good rule of thumb when it comes to this sort of thing code124 is to replace the word men with ‘Jews’ or ‘Black people’ and then apply the binary; if it looks bigoted when said about another protected characteristic, why should it be any different when it comes to men?
