But women are significantly less than 50% of the people in the labour force in any country.

If women are for example 1/3 of those in the labour force it’s nonsensical to expect them to be more than 1/3 of any job category.

It's not a "man's world", or a "man's job" because men do it. Men do it because it's a tough, suckworthy, deadly job, and men are the one's that end up doing such jobs.

No one except the job itself is keeping women out. You cannot fix that, and you cannot fix stupid.

Police chiefs have called for a review of fitness tests for women and expansion of family-friendly policies as the number of female chief constables falls to a ten-year low.

Only four of the 43 police forces in Britain are now led by a woman after the retirement of Dee Collins as chief constable of West Yorkshire, down from a peak of 10 in 2014.

Mike Cunningham, head of the College of Policing, the police’s professional body, said: "There are too few women and too few BAME colleagues at chief constable level, indeed at chief officer level and in senior ranks. Urgent action needs to be taken to address this."

There is only one ethnic minority member of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) - Neil Basu, head of counter-terrorism at the Metropolitan Police.

Just a quarter of the country’s 219 chief officers - those above chief superintendent rank - are female.

Mr Cunningham added: "Does sexism exist in the police? Yes, of course, it does. Are there racists in policing? Yes, there are and there will be. But the point I would want to make is that in relation to respect for diversity, respect for difference, the service has come a long way.”

Women and ethnic minorities are particularly under-represented in specialist areas such as public order, firearms and dog handling where fitness and selection tests will be reviewed.

“How can we encourage people from under-represented groups to take up the specialist roles?” said Mr Cunningham.

“Some improvements have been made but are there physical fitness requirements that are an unnecessary barrier to under-represented groups? “Is there something about the culture of specialist roles that people find them unattractive?"

Three forces are reviewing dog handling tests that were ruled “discriminatory” against women as they required applicants to run 10 miles, carry a dog over a course before running with it a further 100 yards. Another force required applicants to lift a German shepherd dog over a six foot wall.

Police forces have already dropped the Shield Run, a test for applicants to specialist public order teams where they had to run 500 metres dressed in full riot gear and holding a shield in less than 2 minutes 45 seconds.

Family-friendly policies including career breaks, job sharing and flexible hours have been rolled out but Mr Cunningham said more could still be done.

“There’s a very good business reason for putting these things in place. It’s cost effective to train someone and then retain their skills and experience,” he said. “If you can have people doing a job share, you can sometimes get a multiplying effect of 2.5 for one.

“In the College of Policing we have a huge proportion of our staff who are home-based workers. We know that works really well for people with caring responsibilities.”

Nick Hurd, the police minister, is about to bow to pressure to rewrite contracts for senior officers which currently penalise those seeking to work part-time or more flexibly. It will set a defined 40-hour week for superintending ranks.

Paul Griffiths, president of the Superintendents’ Association, said: “We have no defined hours in our contracts which disproportionately affects those working part-time or compressed hours. We are not saying we will only work a 40-hour week but people want more flexible working to suit their needs.”

Special mentoring and coaching programmes to help women and BAME applicants through the selection procedures for senior ranks have also been set up in the past three years, drawing hundreds of applicants.

Martin Hewitt, NPCC chair, set up a working group last month to take action on gender diversity among chief officers. “I am very concerned by the falling number of women in Chief Constable level roles. This work is a priority for me in my role,” he said.

The Home Office said it was encouraged by a 71 per cent rise in female officers at senior levels but admitted forces “do not fully represent the communities they serve and more progress in this areas must be made.”

The four women chief constables are the Met’s Cressida Dick, Cumbria’s Michelle Skeer, Hampshire’s Olivia Pinkney, and North Yorkshire’s Lisa Winward.

I know a lot of police officers socially, and once a few drinks have been had lips become very loose. Apparently it's quite common that:

*Male officers resent their female colleagues because they don't put themselves at risk like the men do. They always hang back on the radio or do crowd control, they are never the first into a scuffle so get injured much less.

*They are promoted much more easily.

*Police PR materials nearly always show male and female officers in equal numbers, or with more women. In reality female officers make up less than 5% of ”beat cops” in most Western countries.

*Female officers often resort to deadly force because they are less physically capable so have less options when physically restraining a subject. If they get close enough to grapple her its over.

*Female officers inappropriately escalate situations because they have ”something to prove”.

*Female officers are paid the same but generally do less work.

*They feel additional stress, because instead of a partner they just have another person to worry about, because when female officers are injured in the line of duty its seen as a failing of their male colleagues.

*Preferential assignments and shifts because superiors are trying to fuck them.

There is usually unanimous agreement any time any of these points are raised.

I don't care for diversity and gender quotas, we need officers that can enforce the law. Is there a study or some statistics that shows criminals get away female officers more?

There are videos of criminals getting away from [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBZum2EfS90](male cops as well). We need more than youtube videos to draw conclusion. Calling officers of the state clowns is uncalled for IMO.
