I have recently had several discussions with feminist friends of mine in regards to the following:
1) Double standards taken against men in regards to speech, perception, demonization
2) Ad Hominem on discussion topics regarding abortion, feminism, racial issues
For the first point... most notably, my recent frustration regarding words such as "mansplain." I find the word to be overused in the modern feminist sector, diluted from it's original meaning, and overall sexist. It is a tactic to delegitimize any claims or discussions a man wish to make, simply on the principle that it is a man explaining something to a woman. In my personal experience, regardless of the tone I take, regardless of the subject matter being discussed, the catch-all tends to be that I am mansplaining if I prove a point or explain a topic to someone who is female. If a similar stigma were touted when a woman explains something, there would be outrage. Why are "mansplaining" and its phonetic cousins so normalized?
Other things relating to double standards are things such as "you cannot be sexist towards men" and the like.
Again, I feel as though this is something obviously flawed logically, yet it is widely accepted as fact.
In regards to the second point... saying things like "you have no place in discussing that because you are..." is ad hominem. For the unaware, ad hominem is a logical fallacy where one party attacks the others person instead of the persons argument with the intent to refute their point.
It feels to me as though emotions come into play on gender issues quite frequently, and men seem to always get the short end of the stick on these discussions.
Anyways, end rant, apologies for the venting. I always found the above points to be thought provoking.
What are your thoughts?
