You have to understand that feminists are using a 'Critical Theory' perspective. Critical Theory views the world as a series of powers struggles between groups. It divides the world into oppressors who have power and oppressed people who do not. From this point of view 'gender equality' means equal power between women as a class and men as a class.
Additionally, 'Critical Theory' creates a moral imperative to fight against the oppressors and liberate the oppressed. Not only that but supporting the status quo means supporting the oppressors. It's immoral to do nothing, you have to be a revolutionary. This is why you see people talking about being 'anti-sexist' and 'anti-racist'.
From this perspective, achieving gender equality means women having more power. So anything that increases women's power in politics or economics is supported. Having more female plumbers is not particularly effective at increasing women's power, so it is not their target.
Edit: Notice the sly use of language. When a feminist says we need to take a critical perspective, they mean something more like "revolutionary perspective" but the public hears something like "sceptical perspective".

Honestly, lots do, but they are directed away by teachers and family.

The number of women who tell me they wish they could have my job would shock you!

And I tell them I spent my 40th birthday at trucking school and it is never too late.

This is an experiment on how women view sexism.

If you don't want to read it, I will summarize it here:

Women were subjected to three different scenarios. One with hostile sexism (sexism against them), one where they were treated equally to men and one with benelovent sexism (sexism that works in favour of the women - basically treating them better than the men for being women)

Obviously, hostile sexism was seen as sexist in their eyes. That's just logical.

Surprisingly, when subjected to equal treatment, they still viewed it as sexism and complained about sexism.

It was only when they were subjected to benelovent sexism that they thought they were treated equally.

The whole "equality in jobs" arguement they have is bs in itself. ALL the women I've asked who are campaigning for "equality in STEM" have chosen non-influenced, fully independent decisons to go into careers not related to science at all. I'd also like to say that there are actually men and women in STEM who want campaign for this - just that all the ones I've asked personally are not in science at all.

There are lots of construction jobs that pay very well. The average is low because it includes a lot of mostly-unskilled day labors. But all the jobs, regardless of pay, are hard work where you can easily see who is actually working and who is slacking. So yeah, women don't want those jobs.

Another reason is all the women making the gender-equity fussing are academics who don't respect laborers, even if the laborer is highly skilled and well paid. So these feminist leaders encourage women to go for the jobs that the feminist leaders see as the good ones: academia, CEO, doctors, high-tech, etc.

For example, an experienced crane operator easily makes $80K and in a big city (where the job is harder and there is more money going around) they often pass $100K getting close to $200K. Because it is a difficult job that shit really depends on, a skilled operator who is efficient and has a low incident rate gets a big premium on big commercial jobs. Same for many other construction jobs.

If the way they charge is anything to go by, plumbers make plenty of money. But it's not a prestigious, high status job. It has no glamor, is not associated with being brainy, and isn't much help if you want to run for politics or influence public opinion.

It's got to be more than profitable for feminists to want it, it has to be "cool." Such is the adolescent mentality of the average womanist.

It is noticeable that the vast majority of active feminists don't follow their own advice and go into stem or construction. Majority of them are white middle class and spend their days indoors in air conditioned rooms no more than 10 yds from a kettle, a radiator or the toilet, all the while telling blue collar men,..... you know, the ones that built the comfortable world that surrounds them, that they are at fault for everything wrong in the world. it is one of the main reasons that less than 10% of women in the UK self identify as feminists

Because they want the prestigious jobs for women to balance the power dynamic. A plumber is not a prestigious career. That's why the covet the STEM jobs most of all. The irony of the situation is that women go into STEM LESS in societies where they have greater choice. Go to a poorer country with less opportunity, and you see more women in STEM, because you need those types of jobs to just be middle class there.

I have worked alongside women as a Power Engineer, and have dealt with female Pipe-fitters and Boilermakers.

Most were every bit as competent and hard-working as their male counterparts. Every one of them said they could not work at a desk all day.

No one makes a popular TV show about women wearing fire resistant coveralls, hard hat and steel-toed boots while threading pipe or turning valves.
