Finally, an argument that resonates with feminism. "Let's do something so no woman has to carry the emotional baggage of having a husband who was raped."

I want to give the woman the benefit of the doubt and assume that she isn't as narcissistic as she sounds. She stuck by her husband through his pain and only a psychopath would do that for personal gain and living with a broken person must be hard but man... that writing team did not do her any service imo.

Manchausan by proxy much?

Doesn't sound narcissistic to me. I've seen what these situations take out of the people around a damaged person. Any normal person will be at their limits.

I know its tough loving someone who is in many ways broken, and how it pushes people to their limits, but I think it's tone deaf to claim to be a victim and "mourn" how little compassion and comfort she's getting. It's one of those moments where there are better ways to express how hard it is without making it seem like "what about me?" There is a lot of interesting bits in there but the whole, "I would marry him again" section could have been tighter to make her point better.

to claim to be a victim

I'm not sure we have good language to speak about what goes into the issues of - lets call it "second hand victims" - and a sparse general social awareness of what is involved. Absent that, when someone speaks directly of what the personal costs are, other people are listening without meaningful context.

The "What about me?" question does not imply that if I get attention then he does not. It need not be not a zero sum game. It may be exactly as stated, that the second hand victims are in a blind spot, and incorrectly assumed to be fine, because they are not "the sick ones".

I have read and re-read that article before responding here. I am not just opinionating sans meaningful background. I have somewhat similar experiences. The article simply reads true to me.

If you have a rape victim close to you, a suicide close to you, severe mental disease close to you, chronic depression close to you, alcoholism or addiction in someone close, it can be like a nuclear blast zone in the afflicted person and the victim is easy to comprehend, but then, all around there can be a zone of chaos and destruction in others. Nearby persons, associates, friends and family, get pulled into the vortex. Very few outsiders have a sense what is happening to the people in the victim's circle.

The term is manchausan by proxy

I appreciate the article, it really speaks up to the issue and you can feel his pain and suffering. It tears you up and makes you want to do something about it, it's really powerful.

What I don't appreciate is the constant "yeah, my husband is in bad shape, but am I okay? Has someone asked me if I was okay?" from her. I mean, I get it, it must be hard being in that scenario, but if you want to speak about the issue and do something for your husband, can you please focus on him instead of you? Because for once, this is not about you

Exactly! Can you imagine the reverse scenario? Some guy saying "my wife was raped; but what about me!!"

[–]Slade_Riprock 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If this was written from the perspective of a man caring for a raped woman... HOLY SHIT BALLS it would go viral and this dude would be on a bridge ready to jump.

Facts are this kind of emotional, mental, and sometimes physical destruction of another person touches every aspect of their lives and the people that love them.

We should do some thi g about male rape because it also affects women... Actual what the fuck.. Hillary Clinton much?... But i must look at the silver lining that being if enough women complain the politicians might move some papers

I don't blame her OP, being put in that situation is very stressful and horrible specially since you don't have any 'right' to lash out, ever.

Sure you can say the guy got the worst of it, but she's also a human being, and even while being understanding, you can still get frustrated. Except in her case she can't ever lash out without being seen as narcissistic or self centered or a horrible human being.

Just reverse the roles, and imagine your girlfriend got raped and lived in a constant state of being distant, depressed and overall barely functional when it comes to a relationship. Sure you'd be super understanding at first but eventually the stress of having to care for a person while putting your own needs aside would become frustrating and slowly unbearable. Except you can't break up with her without being seen as a monster, nor you can complain about it, else you'll just be a 'selfish person that has no idea what she's going through'.

This woman stuck with her husband through thick and thin, she's allowed to talk about her side of things for once.

Since you reversed it and I agree with what you are saying "Imagine the public, very public outcry if this boyfriend of the raped girl wrote this article"

[–]Greg_W_Allan 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good post. The services I'm connected to will provide counseling for close relatives of our victim clients for those reasons and more.

This woman stuck with her husband through thick and thin, she's allowed to talk about her side of things for once.

Exactly. The strain of supporting a badly hurt individual is very real and far greater than most folks know. He's a victim and she's bearing some of the burden, but very few people will empathize with her struggle.
