meanwhile men from her same college were graduated were joining at level 4 (one above her). Google is not sure how or why this was happening.

Well, the men who join at level 4-- did they have some kind of relevant work experience before joining? Did they major in a different field than she did? It's not like these dudes were identical to her in every way, were they? Just because someone graduated from the same college doesn't mean they can't be different people. Did she spend her college days goofing off and downing jell-o shots and emerging with a mediocre GPA? If she spent her time playing around while other dudes in the exact same program were, in their free time, getting certified in a bunch of software packages and doing a part-time job in a relevant field, that wouldn't be a negligible difference.

This smacks of a "he got a slightly bigger cookie than me!" complaint. There are a lot of reasons that could happen without discrimination being one of them. In the case of Ellen Pao, it's obvious to me that she's never been a victim of discrimination in her life but her big thing is all about "OMG I've been discriminated against in tech all my life!" when her job evaluations simply said she wasn't a good match for the firm she was working for.

Huh. Must be evil men and their evil discrimination, then. It's the only possible explanation for everything that goes wrong anywhere.

Sears Roebuck (back when they were a company) in the early 80s underwent a very thorough federal government investigation as to why men were coming-away with higher paychecks despite the company trying very hard to pay women fairly. What they discovered is that men tended to take the higher risk/higher payoff commission-based positions but women didn't choose those positions as much (seeing as how such jobs are either feast or famine; maybe you'd prefer a steady paycheck instead? That's a legitimate preference). There was absolutely no evidence of discrimination anywhere after a 2 year investigation. So what do you do in that case? Stop men from choosing commission-based jobs at a higher proportion than women? You can't do anything about that. You might actually need to tolerate the fact that you are not going to get equal everything across the board in a professional setting even in the complete absence of discrimination. People will just need to learn to live with it given the fact that humans are not interchangeable commodities. The price of gasoline isn't even the same in all 50 states, and humans are way more complex than gasoline.

The reason why Google doesn't know is because they're not measuring every single possible difference between their employees and their behaviors. And if they did, it would be kind of creepy.

Or just scream "male discrimination" if you're a mediocre chick who just wants to bully herself into a promotion. Much easier.
