Four women were convicted of slander by the Helsinki District Court on Friday over a series of social media posts they made about the Finnish vocalist Tomi Metsäketo.

All four defendants were **sentenced to pay 25-day fines** amounting to between 150 and 675 euros, depending on their salaries. The court also ordered the women to pay the plaintiff’s legal fees, which amounted to some 7,400 euros.

Sentenced to pay 25-day fines? What an interesting construction.

Last autumn, Metsäketo was referred to by the women as a “serial molester” and a rapist in social media comments on Twitter and Facebook.

However it ruled that in this case the defendants had breached the limits of protection afforded by freedom of speech. It added that they had crossed that line when they implied that Metsäketo was guilty of criminal activity.

Implied? It reads like they said it outright.

This is indirect, but it's a step in the right direction.

It's more common in Europe.

In Spain, for example, they assess traffic fines based on your salary. It kind of makes sense. If you're broker, a $75 speeding ticket is a disaster. For a rich person it's nothing.

That does make sense. So we'll never see anything like it here I guess.

Wow, is this the first time women have gotten any kind of punishment for a comment online that isn't a false allegation? I'm impressed.

And technically, it's libel.

And technically, it's libel.

Exactly, had she made the report to the police, she would be safe. But as of now, there are no exceptions for rape in libel laws.

Good, I hope this starts a trend in other countries of taking rape accusations more seriously when it's libel.

Seems to me that the entire #metoo movement and it's founders are easy targets. One problem is that you have to be able to afford to raise a civil case.

It's harder because these are relatively high-profile people. But a case could definitely be made against them.

Now they can claim to be "victims".
